Scientific Method Steps • Problem: Ask a testable question. • 2. Background Information: research information that will help you understand the concept that you are testing. • 3. Hypothesis: a statement that tells what you plan to do and what you expect the outcome to be. If this is done…. Then this is what I expect to happen. • 4.Materials: a list of what you use to conduct the experiment.
5. Procedure: step-by-step instructions on how to carry out the experiment.6. Data: a chart where you record information collected in the experiment (observations). A graph of data collected is usually required.7. Conclusion: A statement that answers the question asked in the problem and also tells if your hypothesis was proved true or false. Here you also explain reasons based on your data as to why your hypothesis was right or wrong. You can also state how the experiment could be changed to make it better.
Control • The part of the experiment that is not supposed to change. • It is what you are comparing the variables to. • To see how much things change.
Variable The part of the experiment that changes.
Manipulated Variable(Independent Variable) • The variable that YOU control. • You make this part change on purpose. • It is what you are actually testing, what you want to compare.
Responding Variable(Dependant Variable) • The variable that you do NOT control. • It responds to the manipulated variable. • It is often the result of the experiment.
Constant • The parts of the experiment that remain the same, no matter how many times you repeat it.
