SFX Web Service May 2012
SFX Web Service - Local • The SFX Web Service enables local SFX databases to be queried to determine whether a document is available electronically in full text at the institution • Available for all Colombo libraries using the SFX link resolver • Tested and documented Summer 2011 • Implemented for journal article requests in September 2011 • Implemented for monograph requests in October 2011
SFX Web Service Local - Operation • After a user creates a request, both LocDoc and the SFX Web service are simultaneously launched in order to create a rota of lenders • If SFX answers the VDX query with a YES (indicating that the full-text electronic document is available): • The request will have the Authorisation Status “Check Manual” and the rota will contain “SFX – Name of Institution” as the first lender • The Log Messages section will contain the note “Local Location on Rota” and “SFX – Name of Institution”
SFX Web Service - Other Libraries • Exploration of the possibility of activating the SFX Web service in order to search other institutions’ SFX simultaneously with DocFind • Useful for the situation where not all of the electronic journals available through SFX may be found in the catalogue searched by DocFind • Initial tests of the SFX Web service April-May 2012 • SFX Web service test in production May 2012: • Université de Montréal as borrower • Only CREPUQ libraries • Only journal article requests
SFX Web Service - Other Libraries - Operation • SFX location is associated with one lending location per institution • QXX01 except: QMQ02, QSH02, QQL02 • SFX locations are added to Search Groups and (if the document is located) to Rotas • If the document is found in a CREPUQ library’s SFX, the call number added will be “SFXxx” (SFX01 – SFX16), where SFXxx is the symbol of the SFX location in Colombo • If a document is found at the same institution by SFX and by DocFind, the location is added once to the Rota, unless the lender location identified by SFX is different from the lender location identified by Z39.50
SFX Web Service - Other Libraries – Other Considerations • If a request is touched by ILL staff (authorisation, changes to the rota, addition of a note, etc.), all the “SFXxx” call numbers will disappear for all the lenders (current and future) in the rota. • Problem reported to OCLC
SFX Web Service - Other Libraries – Example • Example: • Nouvelles études francophones • ISSN: 1552-3152 • 2009 • Nephron • ISSN : 1660-2110 • 2007
SFX Web Service - Other Libraries – Next Steps • Implementation after June 8 for CREPUQ libraries, unless you ask us to not set it up • Development request to OCLC for “SFX Responder” (equivalent to DocFind Responder) • Should we configure SFX targets for OCUL? • Questions/Comments?
