Europe About 1100 Most pilgrims were headed to Santiago de Compostela to view the tomb of St. James. There were four main roads leading to Santiago de Compostela (northwestern Spain ) Large churches were built to accommodate the HUGE crowds.

Figures along the bottom are symbols of pilgrims to Jerusalem and Santiago de Compostela ( relics of St James in Spain )
