Aboriginal people • People whose ancestors were indigenous to the Australian continent before British colonization in the late 1700s. • The English government needed a new place to send its prisoners. • In 1788, they sent a crew to Australia to begin building prisons. • Aboriginals were forced off their land and many were beaten, killed or contracted foreign diseases. • Many men, women and children were forced into slavery. • The number of Aborigines dwindled drastically.

  3. First Australians • Aboriginals had the continent to themselves for 50,000 years. Today they make up less than 3 percent of the population, and their traditional lifestyle is disappearing. Almost. In the homelands the ancient ways live on. • By Michael Finkel
