Welcome Back! • Welcome back to The Footsteps of the Master: The Life and Times of Jesus Christ • This is Lesson Number 60 • We last worked on this material on December 27, 2009 • We have covered most of the first two years of Jesus’ ministry • Probably another 60 lessons to cover the remainder www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Who Is The Greatest? “I am the greatest, I said that even before I knew I was.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Who Is The Greatest? • Matthew 18:1-6 • 1Atthat time the disciples came to Jesus and said, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” • Mark 9:33-34 • 33They came to Capernaum; and when He was in the house, He began to question them, “What were you discussing on the way?”34But they kept silent, for on the way they had discussed with one another which of them was the greatest. www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Who Is The Greatest? • Luke 9:46 • 46Anargument started among them as to which of them might be the greatest. • Why would the disciples argue among themselves about who might be the greatest? • How could you be with Jesus for two years and still not get it? • What makes a man desire to be first? • How dies this conflict with Jesus’ teaching? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Become Like Children • Matthew 18:2-4 • 2AndHe called a child to Himself and set him before them, 3and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. 4Whoeverthen humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” • Note Jesus’ comment about being converted • Implies change www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
The First Shall Be Last • Mark 9:35-37 • 35Sitting down, He called the twelve and said* to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.”36Taking a child, He set him before them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them, 37“Whoever receives one child like this in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me does not receive Me, but Him who sent Me.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Receive the Child, Receive Me • Luke 9:47-48 • 47ButJesus, knowing what they were thinking in their heart, took a child and stood him by His side, 48and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Status in the Roman Empire • Class and social status were of utmost importance in the Roman Empire • Imperial Domus • Senators • Equestrians • Commons • Freedmen • Foreigners • Slaves • Children had no status www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
For Discussion • Why would Jesus stress the need for us to become as children? • What attributes do children possess that we should imitate? • How do we become as children? • Why the emphasis on first vs. last? • It’s human nature to desire to be first • After all, who wants to be last? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Causing Another to Stumble • Matthew 18:5-6 • 5And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me; 6but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.” • If drowning is preferable to the other option, think about how bad that option is! • What is Jesus’ point here? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Woe to that Man! • Matthew 18:7-9 • 7“Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes! • The Greek word for “stumbling block” is skandalon, the root of our word “scandal” • What is Jesus’ point here? • We are not only to watch how we behave for our own sakes, but for others, as well • Woe to those who lead others astray! www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Extreme Measures • Matthew 18:8-9 • 8Ifyour hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or two feet and be cast into the eternal fire. 9Ifyour eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than to have two eyes and be cast into the fiery hell.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
For Discussion • Are Jesus’ statements here to be taken literally? • Should we actually cut off body parts to avoid sin? • Jesus calls for a radical transformationin the way in which we live • His words here drive home the magnitude of the change that is expected • This prevents us from being the stumbling block that was just mentioned www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Guardian Angels? • Matthew 18:10-11 • 10“Seethat you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven continually see the face of My Father who is in heaven. 11For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.” • Let that concept soak in ... • Angels in God’s presence • Do you believe in the concept of individual angels watching over Gods children? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
The Ninety and Nine • Matthew 18:12-14 • 12“What do you think? If any man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go and search for the one that is straying? 13Ifit turns out that he finds it, truly I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine which have not gone astray. 14Soit is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones perish.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
For Discussion • What is the meaning of the Parable of the Sheep? • What about the 99 sheep who stayed? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Casting Out Demons • Luke 9:49-50 • 49John answered and said, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow along with us.” 50But Jesus said to him, “Do not hinder him; for he who is not against you is for you.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
He Who Is Not Against You ... • Mark 9:38-40 • 38John said to Him, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name, and we tried to prevent him because he was not following us.” 39But Jesus said, “Do not hinder him, for there is no one who will perform a miracle in My name, and be able soon afterward to speak evil of Me. 40Forhe who is not against us is for us.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
A Drink of Water ... • Mark 9:41 • 41“For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink because of your name as followers of Christ, truly I say to you, he will not lose his reward.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
UnsaltySaly • Mark 9:49-50 • 49“For everyone will be salted with fire. 50“Salt is good; but if the salt becomes unsalty, with what will you make it salty again? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.” www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
Next Week • Parable of the Unmerciful Servant • Matthew 18:15-35 Questions? www.FootstepsOfTheMaster.info
