Career Tips: Speaking to Employers
It all begins with a handshake… a smile, and something to say………
The anatomy of a handshake. Start by aiming the web between your thumb and forefinger toward the other person’s web Then be sure to get the two webs contacting one another (sometimes we have to wiggle our hands a little to work our way into good contact). Finally, gently press your bottom three fingers against the back of the other person’s hand. Adapted from Communication Excellence Institute
What to say…. • 30 second elevator pitch = ‘personal pitch’ • Review your Resume • Research the Company
30 second elevator pitch An elevator or personal pitch is your opportunity to: • tell your story • sell yourself • summarize your experience and background • convince the employer that you are right for the position • leave a good impression
An elevator pitch includes: • Your name • Year in school • Academic major • Your interest: job, internship, career goals • Skills and Experience • Be brief
30 second personal pitch Example: (smile/firm handshake) • "Hello. My name is Jonah, it’s very nice to meet you. I’m heading into my senior year in English here at UCLA, however I’ve gathered a lot of professional experience in computer sales, and am looking for a job in that field. This past summer, I gained a lot of valuable sales experience through an internship with Dell, and over the past two years have also been active in getting my friend’s small computer business off the ground. I’ve researched your company, and I know that you’ve recently expanded your product line to include wireless communication devices. I’m really excited by the recent innovations in wireless services, and would love to find out more about what you’re doing in that area. I’m also very interested in learning about the kinds of training opportunities and entry level positions you have available to graduating seniors."
Practice Create a Worksheet: • Your name • Year in school • Major • Interest – career goals, internship, job • Skills/Experience that relate to this Personal Pitch + Handshake + Enthusiasm
How to end the conversation: • Thank the employer for their time. • It was nice to meet you and learn more about your company. • Ask them politely if you can have one of their business cards • When you step away, jot notes down on their card about the conversation. • You will not be able to remember all the employers and your conversations • Send a follow up note.
Tips: • Employers are here to meet YOU!! • Turn off your cell phone. • Be conversational. • Be polite. • Be professional. • Ask for their business card. • After each meeting, jot down • notes from the meeting. • Follow up with the employer! Be confident.
What Hiring Managers Say: “Most people don’t get the jobs they want because they don’t sell themselves.” • They don’t know who we are… • They don’t know what we do… • They don’t know why they want to work for us… • They can’t give me one good reason why I should hire them… • They don’t seem eager to work here…
Stage 1: Preparation Know Yourself • Knowledge, Skills, Experiences • Examples from Resume • Brainstorm accomplishments and challenges Know the Job & Organization • Job posting (cheat sheet) • Website – Mission Statement, Clients, Services • LinkedIn – Who works there? • Glassdoor – Reviews, Salaries, Interviews
“Tell me about yourself.” Connect your background, knowledge and interests with the job. Who are you professionally? Why are you there? About 2 minutes.
“What are your short and long-term career goals?” Determine how position relates to future goals and whether you plan to stay with the organization. Avoid mentioning specific job titles.
“Why are you interested in our organization?” • Go beyond the superficial (reputation, industry leader) and demonstrate a good fit (emphasize your skills and interests and how they relate specifically to this company). • Demonstrate your knowledge about the firm and industry. • Why this company and not a competitor?
“Why should we hire you?” • Illustrate your understanding of the position. • Show how your skills/education/background relate to the job and organization. • Discuss what you can offer the company and how you’ll be an asset. • Use examples to illustrate your points.
“Do you have any questions for us?” • Your Questions Should Be: • Genuine and honest • Thoughtful and informed • Not about salary, benefits, or personal issues • Sample Questions: • What have you most enjoyed about working for [Company]? • What are some challenges your company/department is facing? • How would you describe the culture here at [Company]? • What are the most important goals at [Company] currently? • What do you expect the first six months of this position to look like?
