PROMARCPromoting Marine Research CareersKick-off Meeting 16 October 2008, Brest WP2: Skill Shortage and Demand Presentation by NTUA-SDL Dr. K.V. Kostas
WP2 Objectives • Identify & quantify current skill shortage in R&D maritime organisations, industry with innovative maritime products, research institutes and wider maritime professional community. (Skill Shortage) • At the same time organizations needing skilled staff for R&D activities will be identified and relevant information will be recorded appropriately. (Staff Demand) • In short, WP2 aims in capturing current skill shortage & demand.
WP2 Description of Work • Identify and clarify the list of organizations that will participate in the data gathering procedures, and update it continuously throughout the project duration • Relevant background work in CA CAREMAR will be exploited (CAREMAR Databases) • A shortage-demand workshop within PROMARC aiming in the interaction of marine-related universities and institutes with the corresponding industry sector • WP2 will develop and use an on-line data acquisition system and questionnaires which will contain sufficient numbers and types of questions to meet WP’s goals. • The on-line portal infrastructure developed within the CA CAREMAR will be exploited and possibly further developed to account for the needs of PROMARC.
WP2 Description of Work / Tasks • Task 2-1 Identification & Quantification of Current Skill Shortage in R&D Organisations. • Task Leader: NTUA • Task Participants: WEGEMT, MPLY, URO, ECMAR, EMEC, CESA, GEOG • Task 2-2 Identification & Quantification of Skilled Staff Demand in R&D/Science related activities. • Task Leader: NTUA • Task Participants: MPLY, URO, ECMAR, CESA, EMEC, GEOG
Task 2-1 Identification & Quantification of Current Skill Shortage in R&D Organisations • Identification and selection of questionnaire’s target group • Development of an automated electronic system that will support the questionnaire distribution, collection of submissions and further data processing and analysis. • Development of the actual questionnaire and provision of alternative data submission methods. • Exploit PROMARC’s members access to marine & marine related institutions and industry • Analysis and documentation of submitted information that will lead to quantification of current skill shortage, reveal the conditions leading to this shortage and possibly highlight ways for compensating or removing it in future.
Task 2-2 Identification & Quantification of Skilled Staff Demand in R&D/Science related activities • Identification and selection of questionnaire’s target group • Reuse of the automated electronic system developed in Task2-1 • Development of the actual questionnaire and provision of alternative data submission methods. • Exploit PROMARC’s members access to marine & marine related institutions and industry • Analysis and documentation of submitted information that will lead to quantification of current skilled staff demand and the provision of guidelines for training, re-skilling or other means for handling current and future demand.
