Skill A marks 0 – marks: No sources except the Stimulus material used. 2 – marks: 1 source used and the information is quoted IN THE BODY OF THE REPORT and referenced. 4 – marks: 2 sources have been researched and information from them quoted IN THE BODY OF THE REPORT. A bibliography (a list of al the sources used) is also present at the end of the report. 6 – marks: more than 2 sources used. All data used is of of direct relevance to the question. Some physical data (figures and numbers) and linked into the structure of the report.
Skill B marks 0 marks – My report includes no data. There are NO TRENDS identified. 2 marks - I have discussed two patterns or trends. As _____ increases, ______ also increases. 4 marks – you have taken data from a source and done something with it – like plotted a graph, worked out averages, plotted percentages etc. YOU MUST REFER TO THIS IN THE REPORT. 6 marks – you have done some detailed mathematical manipulation – commented on more than one trend, and got some new information out of the data.
Skill C Marks 0 marks – no comment about the accuracy / reliability of the data or sources. 2 marks – A very simple comment about the reliability of the data – “This is a reliable source because it is from the BBC”. 4 marks – Direct comparison of 2 sources used saying which was the best and why. Comment on reliability/bias of all sources 6 marks – detailed discussion and comparison of the sources, paying attention to how effectively these sources help to answer the question.
Skill D – relating skills 0 marks – no comments made about social, environmental or economic issues. 2 marks – 1 comment relating to something social, environmental or economic. 4 marks – 2 or 3 comments relating to 2 out of 3 of social, environmental, economic issues. 6 marks – detailed discussion of how the question relates to social, environmental and economic issues. Descriptions of how the scientific evidence could affect government planning and policy.
Skill E - marks 0 marks – The question is not answered. 2- marks – very simple answer – poor or no justification. 4 marks – Question answered with research and data used to justify it. 6 marks – The question is answered as part of a balanced argument, where both sides of the argument are put forwards and a conclusion is reached as to which side of the argument is more important.

(will probably result in a 0 for everything). 2 marks – report can be read but there are no links to science at all. 4 marks – Some scientific vocab. used, spelling, punctuation and grammar is of a good standard – nice to read. 6 marks – Well written, well structured report. Good and relevant use of scientific vocabulary. Spelling, punctuation and grammar are all good.
