  2. Inthe 1700s • St. Paul’sCathedralwasbuiltaswellasthe Bank of Enland and the British Museum Earlyinthe 1800s London wastheheart of thevast British Empire. The riverbankswerecrowdedwithfactories and thepopulationboomedtoaround 6 million. Parts of the city becamemiserableslums, festeringwithdisease.

  3. 1830-1860 • In 1837, Queen Victoria movedintothe Buckingham Palace. Threeyearslater, building beganonthe House of Parlament. Then, in 1851, an exhibitionwasheldinthe Hyde Park tocelebrateBritain’sachievementsinscience and industry. The V&A and the Science Museum werebuiltfromitsprofits.

  4. 1863 • The first underground train line openedin London. Aroundthesametimesteamtrainsrumbled over bridges of London, bringingthousands of newpeopleintothe city. Earlyinthe 1900s WestministerCathedralwasbuiltin 1993.

  5. 1940s • IntheSecond World Warthe city was almost fullybombed. Over 20 000 Londonersdied and millionswerelefthomeless. Atthebombsfell, the British governmentmetinthesecret underground CabinetWarRooms.

  6. Today • London recoveredfromthewar and gotbigger. Around 8 millionpeoplelivetherenowadays. Strikingnewofficebuildingssuchas City Hall, theLloyd’s Building and 30 St. Mary Axesitside-by-sidewithfamousplacesfromthepast.
