Conclusions • Inhibin effectively blocked or delayed the progression of meiosis (GVBD) initiated by both steroid (DHP) and gonadotropin (FPE) in a dose-dependent manner. • The inhibitory action of inhibin was reversible. With longer incubation time, higher doses of inducers overcame the inhibitory effect of inhibin.
Steroidogenesis (DHP production induced by gonadotropin) was not significantly blocked in the presence of inhibin. • Both spontaneous maturation and GVBD induced by steroid in denuded oocytes were inhibited by inhibin.
Inhibin may act directly on the oocyte to block the resumption of meiosis (GVBD). • Results from this study indicate that inhibin may act as a paracrine modulator of oocyte maturation because its effect was dose dependent, not permanent or deleterious.
