  1. Italian Implosion and Renaissance Expansion

  2. A balance of power existed among city-states The Renaissance was able to grow in an atmosphere of relative political and social stability. This stability was fostered by political and military alliances that maintained a balance of power in the region. The Treaty of Lodi v. Venice and the Papal States When faced with external threats, the five most powerful city-states joined together.

  3. The balance breaks in 1494 The new Pope (Alexander VI) sought to end the the Lodi Treaty and conspired to help Naples and Florence attack Milan. Ludovico il Moro, the ruler of Milan made an ill-fated decision to appeal to Charles VIII of France for help

  4. Impact of the French invasion (part I) • Florence is surrendered, Piero de Medici is exiled. • Girolamo Savonarola's Bonfire of the Vanities. • Holy League (1495) responds to stop the French. Ferdinand of Aragon, Venice, Papal States and Holy Roman Emperor • Ludovico re-considers and joins the League. So does Florence, burns Savonarola at the stake.

  5. Impact of the French invasion (part II) • Charles VIII's son, Louis XII, tries to finish his father's work. • Gets help from Pope Alexander VI (wha!?!) • Does favors for Louis XII in exchange for help for His children/family. • By 1500: • Milan occupied/Ludovico imprisoned • Florence helplessly divided • Naples split between French and "Spanish" • Borgia/Pope strengthened at expense to Venice.

  6. Enter the "Warrior Pope" • Pope Julius II, a staunch opponent of • the Borgias, came to power in 1503. • In 1511, the second Holy League was formed. • Aragon, Venice, Papal States, HRE, and the Swiss. • French pushed out of Italian lands by 1512.

  7. Impact of the French invasion (part III) (worst movie ever) • Louis XII's son, Francis I, returned in 1515 to avenge his father defeat. • Easily swept through to Rome - gains concessions from Pope - Concordat of Bologna (1516) • Goes home, but takes Da Vinci with him. • De Medici family rises again in power vacuum - but can not maintain control - HRE Charles V sacks Rome in 1527.

  8. Outcomes of Italian Implosion • Nation-states gain strength (Spain, France, Holy Roman Empire) • Royal families gain power and create rivalries. Valois v. Habsburg • Renaissance is transported to Northern Europe and the Iberian Peninsular.
