Nickname, Region in the U.S., Capital City, Major Cities, and Population • The nickname of Illinois is the Prairie State. • The Region is the Midwestern Region • The capital city is Springfield. • The three major cities are Rockford, Aurora, and Chicago. • The population is currently 12,875,255 people

  3. State flag, state bird, and state tree • The Flag • Cardinal White Oak

  4. Current Governor and State Senators • The current governor is Patrick Quinn • The senators are Richard Durbin(Democrat) And Mark Kirk(Republican)

  5. Borders and Geography • The borders are: • Mississippi River, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Iowa, and Lake Michigan • The geography of Illinois: flat prairies and farmland lie between two large bodies of water, Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River.

  6. Natural Resources and Agriculture • Some natural resources are coal, oil, and minerals. • Illinois would be great for farming. It will be good because there is lots of rich, black soil. They grow corn, soy beans, oats, wheat, and produce livestock.

  7. History and Additional Historical Facts • Statehood: 1818 • In 1717, Illinois became part of the French colonies • In 1720, the French bring Africans as slaves to Illinois • In 1860, Abraham Lincoln became first U.S. president from Illinois

  8. Places to Visit • Chicago- shop, eat at great restaurants, and great sights like the Willis Tower • Abraham Lincoln’s home in Springfield- Visit and look through

Additional Facts • Kaskaskia Island is the only part of Illinois that lies west of the Mississippi River • Glaciers covered most of Illinois during the Ice Age • The state animal is a white tail deer • On Saint Patrick’s Day, the Chicago River is dyed green to express the cities’ Irish heritage • Some Illinois sports teams are: MFL Chicago Bears, NBA Chicago Bulls, and WNBA Chicago Sky • Walt Disney was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois
