  3. Auto Operating Cost Two Components: • Fuel cost (A weighted average of fuel efficiency by auto fleet and based on fuel price data from CA Energy Commission) • Other costs (maintenance, tires, and oil, etc., based on data and statistics from GSA and survey from the AAA)

Auto Operating Cost for 1997 Model Validation • Parameter Value Based on • 1997 On-road miles/gallon: 21.42 MPG for SCAG Region • Average 1997 gasoline price: 138.434 cents/gallon • Convert to 1989 dollars: 111.007 cents/gallon • Fuel cost (1989 dollars): 5.18 cents/mile (=111.007/21.42) • Other costs-maintenance, tires, accessories, etc.-(1989 dollars): 4.6 cents/mile. • Total auto operating costs per mile (1989 dollars): 9.80 cents/mile • AUTO OPERATING COST CALCULATION 1989/1997 CPI = 128.3/160.0
