Jan. 28th “Do Now” – In the spirit of today’s Tone Challenge, try writing 3-4 sentences which reflect a particular tone.You may pick from the following five words: apathetic, sympathetic, exasperated, meditative, optimistic. • Additionally, your original sample should comply with the following specifications: third person point of view; no direct quotations; underline words (diction) that reflect the particular tone The young girl yawnedslowly and deliberately and did notcare about the topic before her. English class was of noimportance.. On a scale of one to ten, it was a zero. The student seemedtobe on anotherplanet. Instead of listening to his teacher, he day-dreamed about going fishing with his dad. He thought about the goodolddays in kindergarten when recess lasted all day long.

“Secret Sharer” Analysis • Secret Sharer Exemplar (an A++ or 9+) • Swap papers with the person next to you. • StEvE: State, Evidence, Explain (You will need three different colored highlighters for this activity.) 4. Pay close attention to the introduction. Did your partner answer the question? Has he/she related Conrad’s use of diction to tone and theme?
Practice identifying tone • Read the passage • Identify the author • Identify the narrator. • Identify the subject of the passage (what is being talked about). • Identify the narrator’s attitude towards the subject. This will give you the tone. Turn to page 82 in your course packs.
Tone Challenge • In groups of three you will read a selection of passages. While reading, highlight or underline the words which seem important to you and to the meaning of the passage. • Consider the highlighted words to decide which tone or tones these words might suggest. Use your tone sheet. • Next to or under each passage write a sentence or two that explains your selection(s).
The Odyssey by Homer "I shall throw you on a black ship and send you to the mainland, to King Echetos, destroyer of all mortal men, who will cut off your nostrils and ears with a sharp bronze sword; he will tear off your private parts and give them to the dogs to eat raw." SAMPLE ANSWER: THREATENING--In this excerpt, one of Homer's characters makes dire threats against another. The key to classifying a tone as "threatening" is the possibility or promise of negative action against the subject.
