World Summit • The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) will be the 10-year follow-on summit after Rio/Agenda21 • Johannesburg, South Africa, August 20-September 3 will the venue for the event • Ministerial delegations and interested parties expected to number over 30,000 individuals
Geographic Information for Sustainable Development • An agenda item promoted by the UN Environment Programme, U.S. Government, Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI), OGC and others to demonstrate use of geographic data and services in sustainability matters • An exhibition area is being established to host presentations for GISD
OpenGIS Pilot • Request for Proposals was issued by OGC in April for participants to develop an initial capability for GISD • Intention is to set up baseline services, data, servers, and client software for used in both demonstration and continued activities
Portal Construction • Build and expose on the WWW a ‘portal’ that makes location of these existing data and OGC-accessed services a one-stop access. • Operate during the demo preparation period and the demo period during the last 10 days of August with 100% availability • Continue operation with limited down time for maintenance
Data Catalogs • Build and maintain on the WWW a Catalog/Registry system that is used to locate these data. • Build and provide on the web a catalog / service registry, to include registration of data and service providers to be used during the demonstration • Continue operation with limited down time for maintenance, to include registration of additional data and service
Services • Extend designated existing Web Servers with WMS and/or WFS interfaces to enable interaction with SCOTS clients • Provide Africa data on existing OGC-enabled WWW servers. • Add OGC-enabled server to existing WWW data server.
Clients • Create and demonstrate several different kinds of client applications that are able to use the facilities above. • Commercial browser • Commercial desktop • NGO browser • Non-commercial browser or desktop

Opportunities • GISD is looking for hosted environmental, social, and imagery data that are/can be supported by OpenGIS services with FGDC/ISO metadata in OGC Data Catalog • Viewer/analytical software can be shown that expoits data content • GISD exhibit with staff can show your scenario for addressing sustainable development, provide by July 1, 2002
