What is Active Reading? Major Tasks: • Find the Purpose • Understand the Structure • State the Main Idea
1. Find the Purpose Each Passage: • Explains a Topic; • Resolves an Issue or Finds Solutions; or • Convinces or Persuades Read: Introduction – first two sentences; Body - topic sentences; and Conclusion – first and last sentence
2. Understand the Structure Passages Have: • Introduction • Thesis • Body • Support & Opposition Paragraphs • Direction & Transition Words • Conclusion
3. State the Main Idea Identify the Thesis or Purpose Find the Topic Sentences Skim the Passage Look at Notes Main Idea should CONNECT ALL IDEAS
Question Tips Every answer is in the reading Some question types are EASIER; Do these first! (First / Second) Just because you’re uncertain about vocabulary, don’t eliminate Use POE: Process of Elimination
