SOAPS Tone • Subject—who or what is being talked about • Occasion—time and place of story/article • Audience—to whom is the article directed; like who is it written for • Purpose—what is the goal of the author; like what is he trying to do: entertain, tell a story, argue, persuade, define, inform, classify, draw sympathy, ignite anger, etc. • Speaker—who is the person telling the story • Tone—what is the attitude of the author: angry, comical/funny, sad, serious, formal, informal, happy, friendly, sarcastic, sympathetic, remorseful/sorry, etc.
