Why was the GNT needed? • End-to-end networking essential for e-Science & Grid applications • UKERNA / SuperJANET provides a core facility to users • MANs, campus networks (and end-systems) complete the end-to-end picture • Technical and organisational assistance with networking evidently needed by Grid users David Hutchison, February 2003
What has the GNT been doing? • Source of networking expertise for Grid projects: Demonstrators, Testbed applications, Grid Centres activities, international projects etc. • helping projects specify end-to-end communications requirements and advise on networking developments • Liaison with bodies including the JISC Committee for Networking (JCN), Global Grid Forum (GGF), National Research Networks (NRNs), DANTE, … • Advising the Director e-Science Core Programme about any networking issues that arise David Hutchison, February 2003
Who are the GNT members? • David Hutchison (Lancaster Univ., chair) • Peter Clarke (UCL, vice chair) • Chris Cooper (OBU/UKERNA) • Jon Crowcroft (Cambridge Univ.) • Bob Day / Jeremy Sharp (UKERNA) • Roland Rosner (Computer Centre, UCL) • Paul Jeffreys (Oxford Univ. Comp. Services) • David Williams (Networking Division, CERN) • Tim Chown (Comp./EE, Southampton Univ.) • Robin Tasker (CLRC, Daresbury Lab.) • Scott Currie (Edinburgh University) • David Salmon (UKERNA, secretary) • Jim Fleming (for EPSRC) • Ray Browne (for DTI) • [David Boyd (CLRC, RAL); • [Mike Daw (Manchester Univ.)] David Hutchison, February 2003
How has the GNT operated? • The GNT members have met 4-6 times a year and at other times as necessary, to set policy etc. • The core group consisting of David Hutchison, Peter Clarke, Chris Cooper and David Salmon have met and/or conferred on an as-needed basis • The operations staff based at UKERNA have been set up to provide technical and strategic support • The monitoring group based at Daresbury Lab have initiated Grid monitoring for Centres and projects David Hutchison, February 2003

What basic questions do we ask? • Does the project stretch the Grid, with today’s networks? • What sort of support would be required from the GNT? • Is this potentially related to other projects or Grid activities? • Does the project have specific challenges or other interests? • What are the future requirements likely to be? David Hutchison, February 2003
