Do Now: read silently then discuss with LP.

Do Now: read silently then discuss with LP A man comes up to the border of a country on his motorbike. He has three large sacks on his bike. The customs officer at the border crossing stop him and asks, “What is in the sacks?”“Sand,” answered the man.The guard says, “We’ll see about that. Get off the bike.”The guard takes the sacks and rips them apart; he empties them out and finds nothing in them but sand. He detains the man overnight and has the sand analyzed, only to find that there is nothing but pure sand in the bags. The guard releases the man, puts the sand into new bags, lifts them onto the man’s shoulders and lets him cross the border.A week later, the same thing happens. The customs officer asks, “What have you got?”“Sand,” says the man.The officer does another thorough examination and again discovers that the sacks contain nothing but sand. He gives the sand back to the man, and the man again crosses the border. This sequence of events repeats every day for the next three years. Then one day, the man doesn’t show up. The border official meets up with him in a restaurant in the city. The officer says, “I know you’re smuggling something and it’s driving me crazy. It’s all I think about. I can’t even sleep. Just between you and me, what are you smuggling?”What is the man smuggling?

explain OBJECTIVE Collect and analyze soil evidence from a simulated crime scene
STORY I went to get my bicycle yesterday evening, so I could go home.
STORY BUT IT WAS NOT THERE
STORY There was just a big yellow piece of paper with some soil on it.
Raise your hand if you will help me analyze this soil evidence to discover who stole my bike.
STEP 1 Copy down this chart on a whole right page. As you do that, I will assign you a square on the chart.
STEP 2 You are responsible for filling in that square by doing the appropriate test / analysis.
STEP 3 You have 15 minutes: • Do your assigned analysis. • Thoroughly clean up your area. • Write the result on the big poster • Write down everyone’s results on your personal chart.
INDEPENDENTLY Use markers to color-code matching results. Then put the markers away.
Which sample do you think matches the crime scene? Move to the appropriate spot in the room. A-sample 1 B-sample 2 C-sample 3 D-sample 4
INDEPENDENTLY Answer 2 of the 3 questions. Write at least ½ of your left page. • How sure are you that we have correctly matched the crime scene evidence? • How might the procedure and the results have been different if you had done all of the tests by yourself? • How closely do you think this lab corresponds with what a forensic scientist really does?
explain OBJECTIVE 2 Recognize various soil types (according to the system that people have already come up with)
explain OBJECTIVE 2 Describe how forensic scientists could use soil to solve crimes
explain Read about it: p 338 – p 342 Focus questions: How does a forensic scientist use soil to solve crimes? Where would our soil samples fit within the classification system described in the book?
explain CHOOSE: One learning partner will be sand One learning partner will be clay
Sand, answer this question to your learning partner for 1 minute explain How does a forensic scientist use soil to solve crimes?
Clay, answer this question to your learning partner for 1 minute explain Where would our soil samples fit within the classification system described in the book?
evaluate Left side Draw a 2 – 6 panel cartoon that shows how a crime could be solved using soil evidence. YOU MUST INCLUDE: Crime Suspect(s) Forensic Scientist(s) / detective Soil type Soil particle size Soil location Soil composition
