Use of Clicker TechnologyRichard L. ZollarsVoiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering There are many options to choose from. I will be demonstrating using the technology from Turning Technologies. This is very similar to the iClickers technology. Both can operate using student response devices (clickers) or via software via iPhones, smartphones, laptops, or any Internet compatible device. There are other technologies on the market that do not require clickers (e.g., Top Hat Monocle) that operate entirely via Internet compatible devices.
Advantages in Using Clickers • Student engagement – students no longer just sit in the classroom but now become actively involved. • Clickers provide immediate feedback to both the instructor and the students. • In my classes I use clickers to probe for misconceptions. If student responses show good grasp of a concept we move on. If not there will be a short (5 – 10 min) lecture covering the misunderstood concept. • Output from software provides information that can be used for grading, attendance, and level of participation.
Uncovering Misconceptions To uncover misconceptions students are asked to respond to a variety of questions. To be effective these questions should: • Contain material focused on a single concept. • Not require any calculations other than simple additions and/or multiplications. • Have distractors than arise naturally from a misconception.
