3. History of BWF • The Badminton World Federation is founded in 1934 as the International Badminton Federation with nine member nations (Canada, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotlandand Wales), the BWF has since expanded to 159 member nations around the world. • On September 24, 2006, at the Extraordinary General Meeting in Madrid, it was decided to adopt the new name Badminton World Federation (BWF).

MISSION • To deliver quality service, world class events, and innovative development initiatives which showcase the sport at the highest levels and increase the active participations in badminton at all levels worldwide. • To be the world's best racquet sport in terms of administration, TV and spectator appeal and as a sport for people of all ages, skill level and cultural backgrounds.

5. Regional Confederations • The BWF works in cooperation with regional governing bodies to promote and develop the sport of badminton around the world • Asia--Badminton Asia confederation(BAC) • Europe-- Badminton Europe(BE) • Americas--Badminton Pan Am(BPA) • Africa--Badminton Confederation of Africa (BAC) • Oceania--Badminton Oceania(BO).

6. The scope of BWF activities • Supporting Training Centres in the development of talented players. • Distributing grants to the Continental Confederations to undertake development activities at the regional and local levels in partnership with national associations;  • Developing coach education courses; • Conducting courses for technical officials – referees, umpires, line judges; • Utilizing itinerate coaches to conduct targeted development activities in the Continents; • Distributing equipment (shuttles, racquets, nets) to under developed regions for badminton development activities; • Supporting member Associations to access Olympic solidarity funding through their National Olympic Committees to deliver development activities; • Undertaking sports science & research in badminton.

7. Tournaments • Olympic Games in cooperation with International Olympic Committee • World Championships • World Junior Championships • Thomas Cup • Uber Cup • Sudirman Cup • BWF Super Series • Two events are no longer held regularly: • World Cup was suspended since 1997. However, the BWF revived the event in 2005 (with China as host) but only as an invitational tournament. China swept gold in all 5 categories. • World Grand Prix has been on hiatus since 2000.

8. World Championships • Brief History - ----The BWF World Championships is held every year except for the year of an Olympic Games. It is a showcase of the very best in the sport and it determines who are the World Champions in each of the five disciplines – men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. • Overview----The BWF World Championships is an individual event and each Member Association is invited to enter their players in the men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and the mixed doubles events. For each event, the third place winner gets a bronze medal, the runner-up a silver and the winner is awarded a gold medal and title “World Champion”. BACK

9. Thomas Cup • History----Formerly known as 'The International Badminton Championship Challenge Cup', the silver-gilt trophy is usually referred to by its more familiar title of 'The Thomas Cup'. The Thomas Cup competition in 1948 was BWF’s first major international tournament. The trophy was donated by the first president of the world body, Sir George Thomas. • Overview----The Thomas Cup – “Men’s Team World Badminton Championship”, held every two years, is the most sought after men’s team trophy for badminton. Only three nations have won the Thomas Cup since its inception in 1948; Malaysia, Indonesia and China. BACK

10. Uber Cup • Brief History----The idea of an international team competition for women along the lines of the Thomas Cup contest was first mooted early in 1950 when the BWF (then known as IBF) received the offer of a trophy from Mrs H S Uber. Prompted by the enormous success of the men’s championships trophy for the Thomas Cup, there was strong interest in the idea and in 1953, the institution of the Championships was agreed upon in principle. Mrs. Uber's offer was gratefully accepted and regulations drawn up and approved for the event and it was agreed that the inaugural contest should take place over 1956-7. • Overview ----The Uber Cup – “Women’s Team World Badminton Championship” - is the most sought after women’s team trophy in the badminton world. Only four nations have won the Uber Cup since its inception in 1956; the USA, Japan, Indonesia and China.
