  1. ETOH

  2. ALCOHOL IS A TOXIC SUBSTANCE • Ethyl alcohol or ethanol is the substance associated with beverages and intoxicating liquors • It acts to depress the functions of the central nervous system

  3. It has significant impact on the ability to see, especially at night. At .10 BAC people are unable to fuse the vision or each eye into a single image (double vision) and glare is bothersome

  4. Once absorbed into the blood it is, within seconds, distributed throughout the body water compartments in consistent concentrations • Most people will reach full absorption within 30 minutes of the last drink, but can be up to 90 minutes depending stomach contents

  5. Once in the blood it is continually circulated through the liver where 90% to 98% if the ETOH is removed by breaking it down into carbon dioxide and water

  6. THE LIVER WILL ONLY DIGEST ONE STANDARD DRINK PER HOUR—NO MATTER WHAT YOUR ADULT SIZE

  7. PER HOUR • ELIMINATION RATES • .015 AVERAGE • .030 ALCOHOLIC • .005 NON-DRINKER

  8. FACTORS • FOOD • STRENGTH OF DRINK • BODY WEIGHT/TYPE • More body fat…..higher BAC

  9. WOMEN • Less enzyme that breaks down ETOH • Hormones • Higher body fat

  10. RATE OF CONSUMPTION • MEDICATIONS • ILLNESS

  11. FATIGUE • ALCOHOL EXPECTANCY

  12. ETOH CONTENT/FLUID OZ • BEER 4% 12 OZ • WINE 11% 4 OZ • LIQUOR 30-50% 1-1.5 0Z

  13. WIDMARK EQUATION • BAC = fluid oz of beverage x % alcohol • __________________________ • body weight x 13.1

  14. Jack states he had four green beers (12 oz, 4%) • He weighs 155 lbs

  15. BAC = (48)(4) / (155)(13.1) = 0.095 • This DOES NOT include any burn off during the drinking period

  16. JACK COULD BE ARRESTED FOR A DUI IF HE DECIDES TO DRIVE, OPERATE OR BE IN PHYSICAL CONTROL OF A MOTOR VEHICLE

  17. I like to drink wine and I have had an unusually rough day at school

  18. I go home and tell Techno about it

  19. I then proceed to drink 6 glasses of wine

  20. I weigh: • 147 pounds

  21. What is my BAC?????

  22. BAC = (24) (11) / (147) (13.1) = .13

  23. Two hours later, Aubre calls and asks Grandma Mary to come over and play

  24. SHOULD I DRIVE?? WHY OR WHY NOT? WHAT IS MY BAC?

  25. DIDN’T GO PLAY WITH AUBRE

  26. BUT……WORK THE NEXT DAY????? • FINISHED DRINKING AT 2200 HRS • PEAK ABSORBTION 30 MINUTES LATER • ELIMINATION RATE .01/HR • WHEN CAN I LEAVE FOR WORK AND HAVE MY BAC 0.000000000000000000?

  27. A person is arrested at 2300 hrs with a BAC of 0.23 • They cannot be released until their BAC is at 0.07 • Elimination rate of .01 per hour • What time can they be released??

  28. 1500 hours

  29. BOTTOM LINE
