Conducting Rigorous Research in Engineering: Creating a Community of Practice Who’s here? Why are we here? What will happen?
Who’s here? • Faculty funded by two NSF projects: • Conducting Rigorous Research in Engineering Education (NSF DUE-0341127) • Strengthening HBCU Engineering Education Research Capacity (NSF HRDF-041194)
Who’s here? • Presenters and evaluators representing • American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) • American Educational Research Association (AERA) • Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education (POD)

What will happen? See 5-day agenda for the topics • Part I - Day 1 (today): focus on frameworks • Part II - Days 2-5: Follow the research process • (1) explain and model a topic, and then • (2) practice and assess your work with that topic.
What will happen? • Workshop format • The central focus is YOUR evolving research question and plan • The sessions are designed to facilitate your learning, creativity, and a sense of community • Interactive and makes use of our collective knowledge • Reflective – time for solitary and group processing • Tools for reflection and feedback • Journals (private) • Posters (public)
Communities for Practice (CoP) • What is a Community of Practice? • Per Wenger et al., CoPs involve: • A DOMAIN (body of knowledge) • A COMMUNITY (relationships between people) • A PRACTICE (shared frameworks about doing things)
