Understanding Characterization Mrs. West
Characters do things. • They feel things. • They hear things. • They say things. • They think things. • They go places. • They can walk, run, leap, and jump. They may sit and rock in a rocking chair or they may score the winning touchdown at a football game. • But the important thing is that characters act.
Characters • When we talk about a character, we often describe that character by using terms called character traits.
Character Traits • Character traits are descriptive adjectives like “happy” or “sad” that tell us the specific qualities of a character. • They’re the same kinds of words that we might use to describe ourselves or others, but we’re using them to describe fictional characters in a story we’ve read.
Check out these examples of character traits: A – active, adventurous, affectionate, ambitious, B – bad, bold, bossy, brainy, brave, brilliant C – careful, charming, childish, clever, clumsy
Now it’s your turn! • Make an alphabetical list (A-Z) of as many character traits as you can! • Can you find any for the letter ‘X’?
Activity • Now, pick three of the character traits you listed and use them to create your own character. • Write a descriptive paragraph about your character describing what the character does to reveal those personality traits. • For example, if you character is messy you might describe how they hate cleaning their room.
