  2. A computer is an electronic tool capable of accepting data, interpreting data, performing ordered operations on data, and reporting on the outcome of these operations. Computers are extremely helpful in generating information from raw data.

  3. A computer network is a system of two or more connected computers that allows computer users to communicate, cooperate, and share resources.

  4. The control function (4)—computer activities that dictate the order in which other computer functions are performed.

  5. Data are facts or statistics.

  6. A database is a reservoir of corporate facts consistently organized to fit the information needs of a variety of organization members.

  7. A dialogue capability is the ability of an MDSS user to interact with an MDSS.

  8. E-mail is a computerized information system that allows individuals the electronic capability to create, edit, and send messages to one another.

  9. Extranet is a program that expands an Intranet to allow organizational outsiders to perform such activities such as placing orders and checking on the status of their orders.

  10. Information is the set of conclusions derived from data analysis.

  11. Information appropriateness is the degree to which information is relevant to the decision-making situation the manager faces.

  12. Information quality is the degree to which information represents reality.

  13. Information quantity is the amount of decision-related information a manager possesses.

  14. Information technology is technology that focuses on the use of information in the performance of work.

  15. Information timeliness is the extent to which the receipt of information allows decisions to be made and action to be taken so the organization can gain some benefit from possessing the information.

  16. The input function (1)—computer activities through which the computer enters the data to be analyzed and the instructions to be followed to analyze the data appropriately.

  17. The Internet is a large interconnected network of computer networks linking people and computers all over the world via phone lines, satellites, and other telecommunications systems.

  18. Intranet is an internal corporate communication network that uses the structure and standards of the Internet to allow employees of a single firm to communicate and share information with each other electronically.

  19. A local area network (LAN) is a computer network characterized by software that manages how information travels through cables to arrive at a number of connected single-user computer workstations.

  20. A management decision support system (MDSS) is an interdependent set of computer-oriented decision aids that help managers make non-programmed decisions.

  21. A management information system (MIS) is a network established within an organization to provide managers with information that will assist them in decision making. An MIS gets information to where it is needed.

  22. A model base is a collection of quantitative computer programs that can assist MDSS users in analyzing data within databases.

  23. The output function (5)—computer activities that take the results of input, storage, processing, and control functions and transmit them outside the computer.

  24. The processing function (3)— computer activities involved with performing the logic and calculation steps necessary to analyze data appropriately.

  25. The storage function (2)—computer activities involved with retaining the material entered into the computer during the performance of the input function.

  26. Technology consists of any type of equipment or process that organization members use in the performance of their work.

  27. A user database is a database developed by an individual manager or other user.

  28. "What if" analysis is the simulation of a business situation over and over again, using somewhat different data for selected decision areas.

  29. The World Wide Web is a segment of the Internet that allows managers to have an information location called a Web site available continually to Internet users. Each Web site has a beginning page called a home page, and each home page generally has several supporting pages called branch pages that expand on the thoughts and ideas contained in the home page.
