  2. Structure of English Intonation- groups • P = Pre-head • H = Head • B= Body • N = Nucleus • T = Tail

  3. Elements in an intonation-group • The pre-head: any unstressed syllable or syllables that 调冠 may precede the head - or the nucleus, if there is no head. • The head: the first stressed syllable in the tone-group except 调头 the nucleus. In the tone group, if there is only one stressed syllable, that is nucleus. • The body : the part that lies between the head and the nucleus. 调身 • The nucleus: the stressed syllable of the last 调核 prominent word in a tone unit • The tail: any syllable or syllables that may 调尾 follow the nucleus
