STA308 Experimental Design and Analysis • This subject introduces experimental design and analysis using real-world examples & the methods commonly used in the analysis of these examples. • Internal and Distance cohorts. • Five assessment tasks including assignments, tutorials and an exam. • Comprehensive Study Guide and textbook.
Online Meeting Tool • Negotiated meeting time using the subject forum. • Wednesday nights 7:30 pm (almost) weekly. • Condensed lecture based on Internal lectures • Added tutorial component with the emphasis on using the statistical software • Shared desktop to see other applications (EXCEL and S-PLUS) • Introduction to topic, essential information, sticky bits then concentrated on the software and interpreting results.
Online Meeting Tool • Participation: • 2 – 6 students (live) • average number of students using recorded sessions • Distance: 11 Internal: 2 • average number of hits on the recorded sessions • Distance: 19 • Duration: typically 1 ½ hours • Large file sizes were a problem

Student feedback • “If there was something in the study guide that I didn’t understand, it was always explained in a different way in the lecture.” • “It makes it so much easier to understand something when it is explained live and examples done where you can ask questions. Although I watched them later I often had the same questions that were asked by the students who attended the lectures live.”

They reinforced the study notes and gave opportunities for enrichment.” • “The lectures were at night which suited me better as I work during the day. I could better understand the content by partaking in the online lectures. You could ask questions and ask for clarification.”
My impressions • Although I found using the new technology daunting to start with I soon (mostly) had it worked out. The students were very forgiving and helpful. It did take extra preparation and time; and by offering it after hours it did eat into my family time BUT without a doubt I thought that the benefits for the students and myself far outweighed any of the disadvantages.
