Methods of Character Development Direct characterization: the narrator or a character in the story tells us what we need to know about a character Indirect characterization: we find out about characters indirectly through thoughts, comments, or actions of the characters
1. • Physical Description • Most common method • Identifies anything physical about the character • Height • Skin • Hair and eyes • Body type • Posture • Clothing • Personal possessions
2 • Name • Sometimes the name is chosen carefully and represents something in the story. Sometimes not
