PhD Educational Objectives • Three to five years after graduation Computer Science and Engineering doctoral graduates should be: • Contributing to their communities and society with innovations in computer research and an understanding of contemporary technological issues. • Advancing in their careers through their research in computer science and engineering, by communicating and working effectively as team members and by interacting responsibly with others in society. • Continuing their professional development through ongoing research.
Student Outcomes for the PhD • At the time of graduation a Doctor of Philosophy student should be able to: • Perform research involving computer systems for the solution of problems. • Formulate problems in their research area that are challenging and of wide interest in the area. • Communicate effectively about their research in computer science and engineering. • Actively contribute to the research in their area. • Achieve the highest level of expertise in their chosen area of research.
Learning Outcome 4. • At the time of graduation a Doctor of Philosophy student should be able to actively contribute to the research in their area. • Criteria • Methods • Results • Use of Results
Criteria • At the time of graduation the number of publications accepted, under review in journals and conferences should satisfy: accepted >=1, accepted + under review >=3. The percentage of students satisfying this should be greater than 80%. • In the Exit interview, …(continued next slide)
. • In the Exit interview, which is conducted after the dissertation is submitted, the percentage of students that rate their ability to actively contribute research as excellent or very good should be greater than 80%. • The department will also measure the time for a full-time student to progress to the milestones: qualifying exam, comprehensive exam and defense of dissertation.
Methods: After the defense • The Graduate Secretary will compile a list of publications and verify this list with the graduate. • The Graduate Secretary will enter the data into a spreadsheet and provide it to the Graduate Director and the other members of the Graduate committee. May 25, 2012
Methods • The Graduate Committee will discuss the level of achievement of the the graduates and any necessary actions. • The Graduate Director will record the discussion and write the assessment report.
Methods: After Submission • After the dissertation has been submitted to the Graduate School • The Graduate Director will perform the exit interview of the graduates to indirectly assess the achievement of this outcome. • The Graduate Committee will discuss the level of achievement of the graduates and any necessary actions.
Methods: After Submission • The Graduate Director will record the discussion and write the assessment report. • From the Alumni database the time to milestones for full-time students will be presented.
Results Use of Results – Outcome goal is met; no action.
