However, these components have to be removed to disassemble the final drive. 1. NOTE: It may be necessary to adjust the lifting straps for correct balance of the final drive. 3. Remove 24 bolts (2) that hold the final drive to the track roller frame. Remove the final drive from the track roller frame. The weight of the final drive is 953 kg (2100 lb). NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the final drive. 4. Make sure the mating surfaces of the final drive and track roller frame are clean and free of dirt and debris. 5. Fasten lifting straps and a hoist to Tool (A) and the final drive as shown. Make sure the final drive is level. 6. Put final drive (1) in position in the track roller frame. 7. Put 9S-3263 Thread Lock on the threads of 24 bolts (2) that hold the final drive to the track roller frame. Install the 24 bolts, and tighten them evenly. Fasten Tool (B) and a hoist to cover (2) as shown. 3. Remove 20 bolts (1) and the washers that hold cover (2) in position. Remove the cover. The weight of the cover is 64 kg (140 lb). NOTE: Shims (3) and spacer (4) may stay with cover (2) during its removal. 4. Remove shims (3) and spacer (4). 5. Fasten Tool (C) and a hoist to carrier assembly (5) as shown. Remove the carrier assembly. The weight of carrier assembly (5) is 159 kg (350 lb). 6. Disassemble carrier assembly (5) as follows: a. Drive spring pin (8) out of planetary shaft (9) with a hammer and punch. e. Remove the other two planetary gears from the carrier as in Steps 6c and 6d. f. Remove retaining ring (13) and sun gear (14) from the carrier. 7. The weight of the ring gear is 50 kg (110 lb). 9. Fasten Tool (B) and a hoist to carrier assembly (17) as shown. Remove the carrier assembly. The weight of the carrier assembly is 154 kg (340 lb). 10. Disassemble carrier assembly (17) as follows: a. Drive spring pin (18) into planetary shaft (19) with a hammer and punch. b. Remove planetary shaft (19), two thrust washers (20) and planetary gear (22) from the carrier. Remove two bearings (21) from the planetary gear. The weight of the ring gear is 125 kg (275 lb). 12. Remove O-ring seal (24) from the main housing. 13. Fasten Tool (B) and a hoist to carrier assembly (25) as shown. Remove the carrier assembly from the gear. The weight of the carrier assembly is 34 kg (75 lb). 14. Disassemble carrier assembly (25) as follows: a. Drive spring pin (26) into planetary shaft (27) with a hammer and punch. b. Remove planetary shaft (27), two thrust washers (28) and planetary gear (29) from the carrier. Remove bearing (30) from the planetary gear. c. Remove 22 socket head bolts (31) that hold gear (32) to the main housing. 17. Install two 10 × 1.5 mm forcing screws in gear (32). Tighten the forcing screws evenly to loosen gear (32) from the dowel pins in the main housing. 18. Fasten Tool (B) and a hoist to gear (32) as shown. Remove the gear from the main housing. Remove shim (33) and bearing (34) from the main housing. 21. Using Tool (D) and a hoist, remove main housing (36) from the end housing. The weight of the main housing is 245 kg (540 lb). 22. Remove Duo-Cone seal (37) from the main housing. 23. Remove two races (38) from the main housing. 24. Remove the other part of Duo-Cone seal (37) from the end housing. 25. Remove bearing (39) from end housing (40). Check the condition of all O-ring seals used in the final drive. If any of the seals are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. Reassemble the final drive on Tool (A). 27. Apply a thin coat of 5P-3931 High Temperature Anti-Seize Compound to the surface on end housing (40) that makes contact with bearing (39). Install bearing (39) on the end housing as shown. Make sure the bearing is in contact with the shoulder on the end housing. 28. Apply a thin coat of 5P-3931 High Temperature Anti-Seize Compound to the surface on main housing (36) that make contact with two races (38). Install two races (38) in the main housing as shown. Make sure the races are in contact with the shoulders on the main housing. 29. Fasten Tool (D) and a hoist to the main housing as shown. Install the main housing on the end housing. 30. Determine the correct amount of shims (33) required for the proper bearing preload as follows: Typical Example a. Using a depth micrometer, measure the step height of gear (32) at several locations around the gear. Find the average of the dimensions measured, and record it. Call it dimension (X). b. Apply a load of 10000 kg (22000 lb) on bearing (34). c. Turn main housing (36) several times to seat the bearings. d. Reduce the load to 4500 ± 450 kg (9900 ± 990 lb). Typical Example e. With the load still on the bearings, measure the distance between the top face of the main housing and the inner race of bearing (34). Do this in several locations around the main housing. Find the average of the dimensions measured, and record it. Call it dimension (Y). f. Determine the correct shim thickness to be used between the main housing and gear (32). The shim thickness is equal to dimension (Y) - (X) ± 0.10 mm (.004 in). 32. Install shims (33) of the correct thickness, which was determined in Steps 31a through 31f, in the main housing. 33. Apply a thin coat of 5P-3931 High Temperature Anti-Seize Compound to the six dowel pin bores in the main housing. Reinstall six dowel pins (35) in the main housing. 34. NOTE: The rubber seals and all surfaces that make contact with the seals must be clean and dry. After installation of the seals, put clean SAE 30 oil on the contact surfaces of the metal seals. 36. Using Tool (E), install Duo-Cone seal (37) in end housing (40) and in main housing (36). 37. Reinstall main housing (36) on end housing (40). 38. Reinstall shims (33) in the main housing. 39. Put gear (32) in its original position in the main housing. 40. Put 9S-3263 Thread Lock on the threads of 22 socket head bolts (31) that hold gear (32) in position. Install the socket head bolts, and tighten them evenly to a torque of 1000 ± 125 N·m (740 ± 90 lb ft). 41. Put a thrust washer (28) on each side of planetary gear (29). Install the planetary gear and thrust washers in the carrier. c. Install planetary shaft (27) in the carrier and through the planetary gear. Make sure the spring pin hole in the planetary shaft is in alignment with the spring pin hole in the carrier. d. Install spring pin (26) in the carrier and into the planetary shaft. Install the spring pin until it is 2 to 3 mm (.078 to .118 in) below the outside surface of the carrier, and with the split in the spring pin facing to either side of the carrier as shown in Illustration C28668P1. To prevent the spring pin from falling out, make a stake mark on each side of the spring pin hole in the carrier. Each stake mark should be approximately 1.5 mm (.06 in) from the outside diameter of the spring pin hole. e. Install the other three planetary gears in the carrier as is Steps 41a through 41d. 42. Fasten Tool (B) and a hoist to carrier assembly (25). Install the carrier assembly in the in the final drive. 43. Fasten Tool (B) and a hoist to ring gear (23). Put the ring gear in its original position on the main housing. 45. Assemble carrier assembly (17) as follows: a. Put clean SAE 30 oil on bearings (21). Install spring pin (18) in the carrier and into the planetary shaft. Install the spring pin until it is 2 to 3 mm (.078 to .118 in) below the outside surface of the carrier, and with the split in the spring pin facing to either side of the carrier as shown in Illustration C28668P1. Make sure the spring pin hole in the planetary shaft is in alignment with the spring pin hole in the carrier. e. Install spring pin (8) in the carrier and into the planetary shaft. Install the spring pin until it is 2 to 3 mm (.078 to .118 in) below the outside surface of the carrier, and with the split in the spring pin facing to either side of the carrier as shown in Illustration C28668P1. Use a straight edge and a depth micrometer to measure the distance from the machined surface of cover (2) to the top of spacer (4). Record this dimension. Subtract the thickness of the straight edge from the distance measured, and call the difference dimension (Q). Typical Example c. Use a straight edge and a depth micrometer to measure the distance from the upper surface of sun gear (6) to the machined surface of ring gear (16). It will be necessary to use a spacer block on top of the sun gear so the straight edge will clear the carrier assembly. Record this dimension. Subtract the thickness of the straight edge and the spacer block from the distance measured, and call the difference dimension (P). d. Subtract dimension (P) from dimension (Q). Record this dimension. The clearance required between the top surface of sun gear (6) to the top of spacer (4) must be 1.00 to 2.60 mm (.039 to .102 in). Add shims (3) between spacer (4) and cover (2) to obtain the correct clearance. 52. Remove spacer (4) from cover (2). 53. Put 1U-8846 Gasket Maker on the mating surfaces of ring gear (16) and cover (2). 54. Install shims (3) determined in Steps 51a through 51d and spacer (4) in cover (2). Access to the automatic travel speed change valve can be made from above or from below the machine. At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil tank is hot and under pressure. Hot oil can cause burns. To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the implement hydraulic circuits (boom, stick and bucket) before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed. 1. Release the pressure in the hydraulic system as follows: a. Fully retract the rod in the stick cylinder. b. Adjust the position of the bucket so it will be flat on the ground when the boom is lowered. c. Lower the boom until the bucket is flat on the ground. d. Shut off the engine, and put the hydraulic activation control lever in the "Lock" position. e. Move the control levers for the boom, bucket, stick and swing through their full travel strokes. This will relieve any pressure that may be present in the pilot system. f. Slowly loosen the air breather cap on the hydraulic oil tank to release the pressure. g. To gain access to the automatic travel speed change valve from above, remove bolts (1) that hold sheet assembly (2) in position. Remove the sheet assembly. Access to the valve from below the machine can be made through the opening at the rear of the main frame. View From Above Automatic Travel Speed Change Valve View From Below Automatic Travel Speed Change Valve 3. Put identification marks on four hose assemblies (3) for installation purposes. Disconnect four hose assemblies (3) from the automatic travel speed change valve. Put plugs in the hose assemblies to prevent oil loss and to keep dirt and debris out of the hydraulic system. 4. Remove four bolts (4) and the washers that hold the automatic travel speed change valve in place. Remove automatic travel speed change valve (5). NOTE: Install the automatic travel speed change valve in the reverse order of removal. 5. Check the oil level in the hydraulic oil tank. Fill the hydraulic oil tank with oil to the correct level. Make sure the automatic travel speed change valve is thoroughly clean prior to disassembly. Put identification marks on all parts of the automatic travel speed change valve for assembly purposes. 2. Remove four socket head bolts (1) and plates (2) and (3) from the valve body. If necessary, remove the locknut and adjusting screw from plate (2). 3. Install a suitable size bolt in the threaded hole in the end of stopper (4). Pull stopper (4) straight out of the valve body. Remove spring (5) and guide (6) from the valve body. Remove ball (10) from guide (6). 5. Remove O-ring seal (9) from stopper (4). 6. Remove stopper (12) and the spool assembly from the valve body. 7. Remove piston (8) from stopper (12). Remove spool (7) from valve (11). 8. Remove two O-ring seals (14) from stopper (12). Remove ring (13) from valve (11). NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the automatic travel speed change valve. 9. Make sure all parts of the automatic travel speed change valve are thoroughly clean prior to assembly of the valve. Put clean hydraulic oil on all internal parts. Check the condition of all O- ring seals and rings used in the automatic travel speed change valve. If any of the seals or rings are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. 10. Install two O-ring seals (14) on stopper (12). 11. Install ring (13) on valve (11). 12. Install O-ring seal (9) on stopper (4). 13. Install piston (8) in stopper (12). 14. Install spool (7) in valve (11). 15. Install valve (11) and stopper (12) in the valve body. 16. Install ball (10) in guide (6). 17. Install guide (6), spring (7) and stopper (4) in the valve body. 18. Reinstall plates (2) and (3) and socket head bolts (1) that hold them. NOTE: If the adjustment screw and locknut in plate (2) was removed, tighten the locknut to a torque of 16 ± 1.6 N·m (12 ± 1 lb ft) after adjustment of the automatic travel speed change valve. To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the implement hydraulic circuits (boom, stick and bucket) before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed. 1. Release the pressure in the hydraulic system as follows: a. Fully retract the rod in the stick cylinder. b. Adjust the position of the bucket so it will be flat on the ground when the boom is lowered. c. Lower the boom until the bucket is flat on the ground. d. Shut off the engine, and put the hydraulic activation control lever in the "Lock" position. e. Move the control levers for the boom, bucket, stick and swing through their full travel strokes. This will relieve any pressure that may be present in the pilot system. f. Slowly loosen the air breather cap on the hydraulic oil tank to release the pressure. g. Tighten the air breather cap on the hydraulic oil tank. h. The pressure in the hydraulic system has now been released. Remove the three covers. View From Under Machine 10. Disconnect four tube assemblies (10) from the bottom of the swivel group. 11. Disconnect two hose assemblies (8), and remove fitting (9) from the bottom of the swivel group. 12. Disconnect two hose assemblies (12) from the bottom of the swivel group. 13. Remove six bolts (11) from the bottom of the swivel group. 14. Fasten lifting straps and a hoist to the swivel group. Remove the swivel group from the machine. The weight of the swivel group is 120 kg (265 lb). NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the swivel group. 15. Check the condition of all O-ring seals used in the hose assemblies and tube assemblies that are connected to the swivel group. If any of the seals are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. 16. Prior to installing the swivel group, put 8C-8422 Gasket Maker on the surface of the swivel group which makes contact with the undercarriage frame assembly. 17. Install the swivel group in the reverse order of removal. 18. Fill the hydraulic oil tank with oil to the correct level. See the Operation & Maintenance Manual for the correct filling procedure. The weight of the rotor is 55 kg (122 lb). 6. Remove five seals (7) from outside housing (6). 7. Remove three seals (8) from outside housing (6). NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the swivel group. 8. Make sure all parts of the swivel group are thoroughly clean and free of dirt and debris prior to assembly. 9. Check the condition of seals (4), (7) and (8) used in the swivel group. If any of the seal are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. 10. Install five seals (7) and three seals (8) in outside housing (6) as shown. Put 5P-0960 Multipurpose Grease on the seals. 11. Carefully install outside housing (6) over rotor (9). 12. To prevent possible personal injury, slowly and evenly remove bolts (1) while retaining housings (2). 2. While retaining housings (2), slowly and evenly loosen bolts (1) to release the spring force. Remove the bolts and housings. If necessary, remove the plunger assembly from each housing (2). 3. Remove retainers (4), springs (5) and (6) and retainers (7) from the valve housing. 4. Remove O-ring seal (3) from each housing (2). 5. Remove valve group (8) from the valve housing. Remove the plug, seat, ball, two rings and two seals from the valve housing. 6. Remove plugs (14), springs (16) and valves (17) from the valve housing. Remove O-ring seal (15) from each plug (14). NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the swing control valve. 9. Make sure all parts of the swing control valve are thoroughly clean prior to assembly. Put clean hydraulic oil all internal components during assembly. 10. Check the condition of all O-ring seals used in the swing control valve. If any of the seals are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. 11. Assemble the swing control valve in the reverse order of disassembly. Tighten the plug for valve group (8) to a torque of 25 ± 5 N·m (18 ± 4 lb ft). 12. If the plunger assemblies from housings (2) were removed, reinstall them.
