Why in the World Are You?Genesis 1:26-28 Image Bearers • God chose to create us in His own image • What does it mean to be an image bearer? • We possess the personality of God – knowledge, feelings (including spiritual), and a will • We have a sense of morality that includes freedom and responsibility • We are all spiritual beings who are built to worship and commune with our creator

  4. Genesis 2:18 (NASB) 18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”

Why in the World Are You?Genesis 1:26-28 Image Bearers • What does it mean to be an image bearer? • Solitary Adam could not alone image God – Genesis 2:18 • So Eve is created out of Adam’s side • Adam and Eve become the first family • Adam and Eve, together-in-community, now can image God-in-community • You were made to glorify God by being in community with Him and worshipping Him in community

Why in the World Are You?Genesis 1:26-28 Image Bearers • What does it mean to be an image bearer? • The image that the man and woman bear is the complex image of God • Adam and Eve love one another, serve one another, and take responsibility for each other that they may bear God’s image, revealing the nature and character of God!

  7. Why in the World Are You?Genesis 1:26-28 Application 1 What are you doing as an image bearer to reveal the character and nature of the God whom you serve? Are you loving and serving others in a way that would portray the nature and character of God?

Why in the World Are You?Genesis 1:26-28 A Life for God • Every aspect of my life is to be lived for God’s glory – 1 Cor. 10:31; Rom. 12:1-2 • 1 Corinthians is written to tell us the nature of true spirituality • Chapter 8 – people’s preoccupation of themselves, their freedom, impact on others • Chapter 9 – the right example of liberty being only enslaved to the Gospel • Chapter 10 – avoid Israel’s mistakes and temple worship

Romans 12:1-2 (NASB) 1Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

Why in the World Are You?Genesis 1:26-28 A Life for God • Every aspect of my life is to be lived for God’s glory. 1 Cor. 10:31; Rom. 12:1-2 • Paul summarizes these three chapters by stating that God is glorified when I live my life for other people because only God can produce this kind of work in us.

Why in the World Are You?Genesis 1:26-28 A Life for God • What this principle does: • Starts with God defining me in relation to Him • Says that me and my life is all about Him • It is only about me to the extent that I relate to Him • That puts me truly in my place • The Gospel then assures us there is no better place to be

  15. Why in the World Are You?Genesis 1:26-28 A Life for God • What does it mean for God to be glorified by my life? • Everything we are, live, and do must commend God to others! Ephesians 3:8-10

Ephesians 3:8-10 (NASB) 8 To me, the very least of all saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unfathomable riches of Christ, 9and to bring to light what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God who created all things; 10so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places.

Ephesians 3:8-10 • You are a trophy of His grace! • There is no other explanation of who I am and how I live except the sovereign and supernatural work of God • Summarized – a life lived for God’s glory is a truly extraordinary life! Matt. 5:16; Eph. 2:10

  18. Matthew 5:16 (NASB) 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. Ephesians 2:10 (NASB) 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

  19. Why in the World Are You?Genesis 1:26-28 Application 2 The question we must always ask, no matter what the situation, is: How is this going to glorify God?
