The Peking opera was dramatically altered when the communist party took control of the government in 1949. Communist officials denounced Peking opera, saying that it preserved superstition, perpetuated the backwards laws of feudal society, reinforced old-fashioned Confucian philosophy and encourage a class system of servants and masters. During the Cultural Revolution the Peking opera was wiped out and replaced with plays more pro-communist themes. Today there is a movement to revive the Peking opera.
