INTRODUCTION • Quick Response Code (QR Code). • Created and introduced by Japanese company Denso-Wave in 1994 (tracking vehicle). • Bi-dimensional squared matrix code with black and white pixels. • Pixels translated with the help of smart devices. • Can encode numeric, alphanumeric, byte/binary, kanji. • Initially used for Commercial purpose. • Libraries also using QR codes for its services. • ISO/IEC 18004:2015 (Automatic identification and data capture techniques). STRUCTURE OF QR CODE • Finder Pattern arranged at lower left, upper left, and upper right. Used to detect the position. • Alignment Pattern used to identify to correct the distortion of the symbol. • Timing Pattern used to coordinate with each cells. • Quiet Zone used to separate the QR Code from the external area. • The Data Area is important one which carries data and error correction code. HOW QR CODE WORKS The example of input data value 01234567 is divided into group of three digits : 012 345 67 Convert each group to its binary equivalent : 012 - 0000001100 345 - 0101011001 67 - 1000011 Connect the binary data in sequence : 0000001100 0101011001 1000011 Convert character count indicator to binary, in this case number of input character is 8 converted in 10 bit binary equivalent : 0000001000 Add mode indicator 0001 and character count indicator to binary data: 0001 0000001000 0000001100 0101011001 1000011 For any number of data characters, the length of the bit stream in numeric mode is given by the following formula, B=M+C+10(D DIV3)+R Where B Number of bits in bit stream M number of bits in mode indicator C number of bits in character count indicator D number of input data characters R 0 if (D MOD 3)=0 R 4 if (D MOD 3)=1 R 7 if (D MOD 3)=2 NACLIN 2019, September 18-20, 2019, Udaipur

GAS TURBINE RESEARCH ESTABLISHMENT • GTRE, DRDO located in Bengaluru. • Automated with RFID system. • ~35K print collection, ~1L digital collection. • CAS and SDI service. • Union Catalogue of Aerospace lab. • Only GTRE library implemented QR Code. • As a pilot study, QR code implemented in, • Contact librarian • New Arrivals • Stock guide • Research Articles • OPAC. NACLIN 2019, September 18-20, 2019, Udaipur
USAGE OF QR CODE IN GTRE • User Survey conducted in April 2019. • Interviewed with five questions. • Users - Scientists to Technicians on random sample basis. FINDINGS Awareness NACLIN 2019, September 18-20, 2019, Udaipur
CONCLUSION • QR Code can be integrated with library services. • Accessed on mobile phones. • Library collection, website, contact number, rack position, stock position, membership details, etc can be easily shared. • Librarians need to implement new technologies since users are tech savvy. • Can be extended to all DRDO labs. • In addition to libraries, managing e-resources, employees’ personal information system, and labs inventory items can be covered.
