  1. Creating and Annotated Bibliography

  2. What to include? 1) Citation of your source 2) Summary of the source 3) Author’s main argument 4) Evaluation of the source’s intended audience

  3. Citation Samples MLA: Lamott, Anne. Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life. New York: Anchor Books, 1995. Print. APA: Ehrenreich, B. (2001). Nickel and dimed: On (not) getting by in America. New York: Henry Holt and Company. CMS: Davidson, Hilda Ellis. Roles of the Northern Goddess. London: Routledge, 1998.

  4. Quoting, Paraphrasing, Summarizing... • Quotation: identical to the original. They must match the source document word for word and must be attributed to the original author. • Paraphrasing: put a passage from source material into your own words. A paraphrase must also be attributed to the original source. • Summarizing: put the main idea(s) into your own words, including only the main point(s). Once again, it is necessary to attribute summarized ideas to the original source.

  5. Paraphrasing The current constitutional debate over heavy metal rock and gangsta rap music is not just about the explicit language but also advocacy, an act of incitement to violence. Paraphrase:  Lyrics in some rap and heavy metal songs that appear to promote violence, along with concerns about obscenity, have generated a constitutional debate over popular music.

  6. Summarizing 1) the basic order of the original text is maintained 2) some words have been changed to close synonyms 3) avoid cutting too much important information Overall, the first two quarters of 2008 have been profitable to the company.  Nineteen of twenty departments report cutting costs at least twenty percent, and sales from fifteen departments have risen five percent, or about $5 million.  Despite these positive developments, most department heads believe that they will not be able to maintain these levels for the remainder of the year.  Summary: The first two quarters of 2008 have been profitable, but the rest of the year is not expected to be as good.

  8. Main argument (thesis statement) • It is a one- or two-sentence condensation of the argument or analysis that is to follow. • It is an argument that you think you can support with evidence but that may need adjustment along the way. Why do essays contain a Thesis Statement? • to test ideas by distilling them into a sentence or two • to better organize and develop the argument • to provide your reader with a “guide” to the argument

  9. 3 parts of a thesis statement • Topic or subject • Opinion • Reasoning • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HePQWodWiQ

  10. Compare and contrast the reasons why the North and South fought the Civil War weak • The North and South fought the Civil War for many reasons, some of which were the same and some different. • It restates the question without providing any additional information. • “What reasons? How are they the same? How are they different?” • While both Northerners and Southerners believed they fought against tyranny and oppression, Northerners focused on the oppression of slaves while Southerners defended their own right to self-government.

  11. Let’s practice! • Let’s practice creating an annotated bibliography of Greene’s article in the WaW textbook. • Citation (according to the convention of your field) • Summarize the text • Write the author’s main argument • Decide the audience for this piece

  12. Now, start writing the annotation of your sources • Do not forget to include: • Citation (according to the convention of your field) • Summary the text • The author’s main argument • The audience for this piece
