  3. The vikings • Denmark, Norway, Sweden • The word ‘Viking’ means ‘a pirate raid’ • The Viking Age – AD 700 to 1100 • Vikings mostly settled in Scotland and eastern England (they founded Dublin) • The Vikings lived in tribes and were pagans • Bold and skillful seamen

  4. The danes • 871 – the Danes invaded Wessex again • They were allowed to settle by Danelaw and Wessex (York) • England went under Danish control in 1013 • Canute (Cnut the Great) • King of Denmark • The most effective king in Anglo-Saxon history
