  2. Returning to the Old Path of Biblical ScholarshipIntroduction:1. The need to return to The Old Paths for Judah.Jer. 6:16Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. a. The Certainty of Coming Judgment – Babylon’s invasion. b. The Commander of Babylon was God. c. The Condemnation of Jerusalem and the Calamity that would befall her. 6:1-3 cf. 4:5, 6 6:4-6a 6:6b-9, 10-15

  3. 1. The need to return to The Old Paths for Judah.Jer. 6:16 d. The Call to Return to the Old Paths. i. The people’s Refusal to Return – they had Rejected God’s Law. ii. They Relied on their Rituals of Worship. e. The Coming of the Babylonian Raiders and the Captivity of Judah. f. Compare God’s Commission of Ezekiel to His Rebellious nation.(9 occ. in 8 verses) 6:16-21 6:16-19 6:20 6:21-30 Eze. chs. 2 & 3

  4. (1) The Need to Return to The Old Paths for Israel. Jer. 6:16 (2) The Need to Return to The Old Paths for the Church. II Thes. 2:15 - Brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle. a) Know the Difference between the Day of Christ (KJV) and the Day of the Lord (NIV) 2:1, 2 b) Be not Deceived by the Delusion and 2:3-12 Deception of the coming Antichrist. (2:9-12) c) They have been Discipled well in the Doctrines – stand Fast in and holdFirmly to them. 2:13-14 (-17) • These Doctrines would be the… i) Traditions received by Word and in Writing 2:15 cf. 3:6 ii) Ordinances delivered to the Corinthian believers. I Cor. 11:2, KJV iii) The TeachingsPassed on to them. I Cor. 11:2, NIV Note: Traditions = Ordinances = Teachings = paradosis = transmission, i.e. a precept; spec. the Jewish traditionary law:- -ordinance, tradition. Strong

Hence, the need to Return to… The Old PathsTheme and Text: Jer. 6:16 THE OLD PATH OF BIBLICAL SCHOLARSHIP • THE NEW TRENDS OF DOWNGRADING THE WORD. • How a Man feels is More Meaningful than what Scriptures Say. • Devotional Preaching is more interesting than Doctrinal Precepts, cp. II Tim. 4:1-5 • Modern “Message” Translations (inc. Paraphrases) are More Meaningful than obsolete Literal Translations.

  6. THE OLD PATH OF BIBLICAL SCHOLARSHIPA. THE NEW TRENDS OF DOWNGRADING THE WORD. • New “pocket” writings are more readable and Clearer than old voluminous Commentaries. • Experiential Eisegesis is more Edifying than Expository Exegesis. • The New Testament is Inspiring while the Old Testament is Irrelevant. • The Theory of Evolution Makes Sense while the Creation Story is a Myth - http://www.answersingenesis.org/

Neh. Ch. 8 8:1, 9 8:1-3, 8 8:4-7 8:9-12 8:13-18

  8. B. THE OLD TRAILS OF DEPENDENCE ON THE WORD. 1. A Return to the Old Paths Led to Revival and Reforms – • Revival under Nehemiah • Reforms under Josiah. II Kgs. Chs. 22, 23 • Repairs to the Temple. 22:3-7 • Recovery and Private Reading of the Book of the Law (Deut?) 22:8-10 • Revelation of the Law in Prophecy. 22:11-20 • Reading of the Law in Public and Rededication. 23:1-3 • Reforms of Josiah. 23:4-25 vi. Retribution was sure. 23:26, 27

  9. 1. A Return to the Old Paths Led to Revival and Reforms – 2. The Requirement needed to Return to the Old Paths of Biblical Scholarship – A Search of the Scriptures. • A Diligent Search of Scriptures: • Search the scriptures…they are they which testify of Me. John 5:39 • the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. 1 Pet 1:10, 11 iii. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Acts 17:11

  10. a. A Diligent Search of Scriptures:b. An Intelligent Study of ScriptureStudy to show thyself approved unto God…2 Tim 2:15 • a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. KJV • a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. NIV • a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth. NRSV • Note: study = spoudazo i.e. to make effort, be prompt or earnest:--do (give) diligence, be diligent (forward), endeavour, labour, study. Strong

In his preface to the English Bible of 1535, Miles Coverdale had this to say about studying and understanding the Bible: • “It will greatly help you to understand Scripture if you mark not only what is written, but of whom, to whom, with what words, at what time, where, to what intent, with what circumstances, considering that which goes before and that which follows.”
