Returning to the Old Path of Biblical ScholarshipIntroduction:1. The need to return to The Old Paths for Judah.Jer. 6:16Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein. a. The Certainty of Coming Judgment – Babylon’s invasion. b. The Commander of Babylon was God. c. The Requirement needed to Return to the Old Paths of Biblical Scholarship – A Search of the Scriptures. • A Diligent Search of Scriptures: • Search the scriptures…they are they which testify of Me. John 5:39 • the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you: Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow. 1 Pet 1:10, 11 iii. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Acts 17:11

An Intelligent Study of ScriptureStudy to show thyself approved unto God…2 Tim 2:15 • a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. KJV • a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. NIV • a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth. NRSV • Note: study = spoudazo i.e. to make effort, be prompt or earnest:--do (give) diligence, be diligent (forward), endeavour, labour, study. Strong
In his preface to the English Bible of 1535, Miles Coverdale had this to say about studying and understanding the Bible: • “It will greatly help you to understand Scripture if you mark not only what is written, but of whom, to whom, with what words, at what time, where, to what intent, with what circumstances, considering that which goes before and that which follows.”
