Our Goals We are working and planning together to: • Establish a learning community • Expand our learning beyond the Onaway community • Foster natural curiosity • Use inquiry to develop global lifelong learning skills necessary for the 21st century • Provide opportunities to practice social skills and celebrate our diversity

  3. What is IB? Mission: • The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. • To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. • These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

  4. Shaker Heights City School District and IB • PYP (Primary Years Programme) • Pre K-4 • MYP (Middle Years Programme) • 5-10 • DP (Diploma Programme) • 11-12 Shaker Heights has an authorized DP; now the K-4 schools are applying for PYP authorization. MYP to follow.

Some Basic Planner Components • Pre-assessment– previous knowledge and understanding • Provocation - an activity that makes students curious about upcoming learning • Learning experiences – varied and engaging • Formative assessments – checking student understanding throughout unit for adjustments • Summative assessments– checking student understanding at conclusion of unit • Student reflection – students think about how they learn(ed) best

Key Concepts: connection, change, causation Related Concepts: networks, production and consumption, consequences Lines of inquiry: • producing and selling • wants and needs • goods and services

Learning Experiences Karen Lum – fourth grade Theme: Where We Are in Place and Time Central Idea: “Human migration causes cooperation and conflict.” ODE Standards: Various groups of people have lived in Ohio over time, including the prehistoric and historic American Indians, migrating settlers and immigrants. Interactions among the groups have resulted in cooperation and conflict. Key Concepts: form, change, connection Related Concepts:similarities and differences, relationships, adaptations Lines of inquiry: • interactions among groups • the reasons for immigration/migration • impact of various cultures on the population

ODE Standards: Science and technology have changed daily life. Key Concepts: function, reflection, change Related Concepts: evidence, cycles, systems Lines of inquiry: • Cycles within the solar system • Technological contributions • Artifacts, maps and photographs

  22. Summative Assessment Susan Mears – Kindergarten Theme: Where We Are in Place and Time Central Idea: People move from one place to another and adapt to their surroundings. ODE Standards: Objects and materials can be sorted and described by their properties. Humans depend on and impact the physical environment in order to supply food, clothing and shelter. Key Concepts: causation, connection, perspective Related Concepts: traditions, impact, exploration Lines of inquiry: • homes and journeys • adaptations to different places • properties of materials

ODE Standards: Individuals make the community a better place by solving problems in a way that promotes the common good. Laws are rules which apply to all people in a community and describe ways people are expected to behave. Laws promote order, security, provide public services and protect the rights of individuals in the local community. • Key Concepts: function, connection, form • Related Concepts: governments, family/school, interdependence • Lines of inquiry: • Historical origin of government • Governmental roles and responsibilities • The interaction among societal systems • Power and influence connected to organizations
