ROANOKE ISLAND • Island along coast of North Carolina • Sir Walter Raleigh raises funding • 1ST attempt in 1585 is abandoned • 2nd attempt in 1787 is led by John White • English families come over as part of an Economic Venture • The colonists disappear when White is delayed in England while getting supplies • The “Lost Colony” loses money

JAMESTOWN • Susan Constant, Discovery and Godspeed sailed into the Chesapeake in 1607 • Built settlement on the James River in Virginia • English colonists funded by the Virginia Company of London • John Smith’s leadership important in survival of colony • Colony is an Economic Venture – Tobacco makes money after other attempts failed

PLYMOUTH • The Mayflower sailed to the coast of Massachusetts in 1620 • Separatists (Pilgrims) borrow money from the Virginia Company of Plymouth • Pilgrims are led by William Bradford • Pilgrims come seeking Freedom of Religion – want to avoid religious persecution • 1st Thanksgiving celebrated with Indians

MASSACHUSETTS BAY • Settled north of Plymouth on the coast of Massachusetts (site of modern-day Boston) • Puritans led by John Winthrop arrive in 1630 • Puritans come for Freedom of Religion – want to avoid religious persecution and want to establish a society based on their beliefs • Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Hampshire formed by settlers who leave Massachusetts Bay

PENNSYLVANIA • Settled along the Delaware River – modern-day Philadelphia established • Settled by Quakers in 1630 after William Penn obtained the land grant from the King • Quakers came for Freedom of Religion - they wanted to practice their faith without interference • Greater degree of equality and freedom existed in Pennsylvania than in other colonies

GEORGIA • Savannah, Georgia established by settlers coming to the region between Florida and the Carolinas in 1733 • English debtors (had been in prison) led by James Oglethorpe • Debtors came hoping to experience a new life and Economic Freedom in the New World • English leaders believed Georgia would serve as a military barrier (buffer) against the Spanish
