Exploring Sonoluminescence: Research Progress and Collaboration Overview

Explore the collaborative sonoluminescence project at Academia Sinica and CIAE with a focus on background, detailed experimentation, research directions, and progress updates. Delve into the key physical questions surrounding sonoluminescence and the efforts to understand the light emission mechanism within the SL bubble. Follow the research progress at both institutions, including experimental setups, mechanical structures, data analysis methods, and future prospects for high-temperature emissions. Gain insights into the facilities at CIAE, with a goal to repeat the ORNL experiment and utilize state-of-the-art neutron detection technology. This interdisciplinary project aims to shed light on the mysteries of sonoluminescence and nurture scientific collaboration.

  2. Outline • Background • Collaboration • Experiment in Oak Ridge National Lab. • Our Research Directions • Progress at Academia Sinica • Progress at CIAE • Summary

  3. Collaboration • Academia Sinica • CIAE (北京原子能院) • NCU (中央大學) • NCCU (中正大學) • NJU (南京大學)

  4. Background • Sonoluminescence found in 1930’s. (MBSL) • Gaitan made SBSL in 1989 • Nuclear fusion in SL ? • ORNL group first announced their observation in 2002 • More convictive proof found in 2004 • Key physical questions • How hot/dense does it get inside the SL bubble? • Light emission mechanism not clearly known

  5. ORNL Experiment

  6. Proof of Neutron Emission in ORNL’s Experiment

  7. Our Research Direction • Understand light emission mechanism in SL -- Estimate the size of light emitting region in bubble by HBT method -- Pico-second timing measurement for SL pulse shape • Study prospects of highER temperature emissions than optical -- Try to repeat ORNL’s experiment -- Detect UV emission in SL by fluorescent luminescence (To be reported by Yang Yi tomorrow)

  8. Progress at Academia Sinica • Experimental setup and improvement • Mechanical structure for angular measurement • DAQ (LabView and Linux) • Data Analysis (ROOT) • Gas system • Feedback control • Different cavity configurations

  15. Progress at CIAE • Target: to repeat the ORNL experiment • Facility • CIAE Pulsed Neutron Generator • Neutron detector • PSD (pulse shape discriminator) and TOF (time of Flight) detector for particle discrimination and energy measurement

  16. CIAE Facility – CPNG • CIAE Pulsed Neutron Source • 14MeV or 3MeV • 1.5ns spill length, repetitive rate 1.5MHz • 1010 neutrons per spill Beamline

  17. CIAE Facility – Detector • NE213 • Liquid scintillation neutron detector • Sensitive Area: Φ180mm×50mm • Detect efficiency acceptable when E>1MeV

  18. Summary • SL research project initiated • AS led, use HEP style/techniques to study the table-top experiment, an inter-discipline science • AS: Set up experimental tools • UV detection: result soon • High acoustic pressure cavity • CIAE: neutron generator and detection • Repeat ORNL experiment • Under preparation
