WHAT IS ANGER? • An intense emotional reaction in response to a variety of situations • An unpleasant, emotional feeling that is hard to control • A combination of an inner emotional response and an outer behavioral response
WHAT IS ANGER (CON’T) • A secondary emotion • A natural response to stress and frustration • A learned defense against painful feelings • Physiological arousal to a changing environment
WHAT CAUSES ANGER? • A person’s goal is blocked • An inability to control or master a situation • A person’s mind set about what one needs to be happy or feelings of guilt/ powerlessness
WHAT CAUSES ANGER (CON’T) • An inability to meet one’s deepest needs • A person’s self-centeredness • A person’s inability to love self or others • A self protection strategy
WHAT DOES ANGER DO? • Limits or eliminates connection with others • Causes trouble • Clouds rational thinking • Removes learned inhibitions
REDUCING THE POWER OF ANGER • Develop a healthy self image • Stop blaming others for our problems or situations • Develop problem solving skills • Learn to take action in healthy ways • Accept both your strengths and weaknesses • Seek wise counsel
