Changes for Samantha Valerie Tripp By: Emily Wesley
Summary Times change for Samantha when she moves to New York to live with her Aunt Cornelia and Uncle Gard. They change for Samantha’s best friend Nellie too. Nellie has to move and Samantha is looking for her and is afraid she will never find her, but when she does, she sees that Nellie is living in a servant orphanage. Samantha helps Nellie and her sisters to escape, and at the end, Nellie, her sisters, Samantha, her aunt and uncle are all reunited and become a bigger family.
Moods between the settings and characters • When Samantha walked into the New York streets where Nellie lived, her mood immediately changed from excited to see Nellie to fearful of the nasty and ghostly neighbor hoods. • Samantha walked into the orphanage grateful to hear and see Nellie then when she saw the directress, Miss Frouchy and all the other hopeless orphans in the dark and gloomy room she felt sorrow and sadness for all them.
Author’s writing • I like how in the book Changes for Samantha the author uses “intense” moods like ferocious, cheerless, shadowy, etc. • The author also uses great words in the book, such as gawk, hooligan, hubbub, etc.
Letter to Samantha Dear Samantha, How are you? How are Nellie, Bridget, Jenny, your Aunt Cornelia and Uncle Gard? Have Nellie, Bridget and Jenny got into school yet? I’m doing great in school and I love it. I have made many friends and I play lots of sports like gymnastics, soccer, swimming, and volleyball. I also love crab and ice-cream! Please write back soon! Sincerely, Emily
