Question of Fact • Concerns a statement that can be seen as either true or false • “Recycling can save the school money” • Question of Value • Deals with what is right or wrong, moral or immoral • “Abortion is wrong” • Question of Policy • Focuses on a particular action – you try to convince the audience to act on or change a policy • “School uniforms should be required at PHS” Types of Persuasion
Your topic should be something you feel strongly about • Your topic should be something that others may have different views on • Your topic should be something that is relevant, current and unresolved Choosing a Topic
How does the audience feel about your topic? • Audience Types • Mostly Favorable • Majority of listeners agree with your thesis • Goal – sustain and build on favorable attitude • Mostly Neutral • Majority of listeners have not reached a decision • Goal – give them enough information to take a stand • Mostly Apathetic • Majority of listeners have no interest in your thesis • Goal – make a personal connection, show listeners how the topic affects them personally • Mostly Hostile • Majority of listeners oppose your thesis • Goal – open the minds of listeners to at least give your ideas a chance Audience Analysis

Deductive • Statement of Reasons • Direct support, here are the reasons • Problem-Solution • Identifies the problem, promotes a solution • Comparative Advantage • My plan, way, idea is better than the best alternative • Inductive • Criteria-Satisfaction • Establishes criteria for good plan, idea, etc., then proves that your idea, plan, etc. meets those criteria • Negative Method • All the other ideas are bad, so choose mine • Monroe’s Motivated Sequence • Attention, Need, Satisfaction, Visualization, Action Organizational Patterns
Apply Logical Reasoning (LOGOS) • Testimonials • Statistics • Facts • Expert Opinions • Develop Emotional Appeal (PATHOS) • Specific examples (personalize it) • Vivid language (metaphors, parallelism, etc.) • Establish Your Credibility (ETHOS) • Competence – your argument is well qualified • Sincerity – you are genuine • Dynamism – you are energetic and enthusiastic Persuasive Techniques (again!)

We are too short on time to give any extra time after that! • By the end of class you must sign up for your topic. You will need to say if you are doing the Principal or the Hero Speech. • Begin working on your outline. • Work quietly. There should be NO TALKING!
