  1. Am I Ready to Lead During a Recession:  Using Branching Simulation for Assessment in These Trying Times

  2. The strongest and most effective way to learn from experience, besides life itself, is to use a well-designed imitation of reality. Rehearse future success through world-class business simulations. Fail forward. Blueline Simulations and Humentum, 2007 Blueline Simulations and Humentum 2007

  3. Session Objectives At the completion of this session, participants will: • Better understand the opportunity for Assessment using Scenario Branching or Decision Tree Simulations • Play the Leading During a Recession Assessment Simulation • Discussion/Q&A

  4. Immersive Learning Simulations: Base story line and decision tree on desired experience / learning objectives Use a decision tree to guide story line events Provide immediate decision feedback through story line events Provide detailed decision feedback, both evaluative and variable-based Employ multiple decision types Provide a learning experience that includes: Using the power of Storytelling to provide an immersive experiential exercise Learning-by-doing/Experiential learning Experience how decisions impact the broader team and organization in a risk-free environment “What if” scenarios foster and develop analytical skills and Problem Solving techniques Demonstrates impact of decisions in a compressed timeframe A context for participants to share experiences / learn with colleagues What Do We Mean By Simulation

  5. Why Use Simulation?

  6. Why Assessment Simulations • In good times, leaders are driven to analyze situations and make the most of opportunities by placing strategic bets on decisions that have profitable outcomes. In bad times, it’s the opposite; leaders are driven to not make calculated decisions, rather analyze everything and focus on the little things that save money instead of the big things that drive growth. In this environment, with pending additional cuts, it creates a survival of the fittest mentality where backstabbing, one-upmanship, and political alliances take precedence over things like strategy, customer focus and looking toward the future.

  7. What are Leaders Supposed to do? • What are the competencies and skills that are associated with leading a business during a recession? • Based on our experiences and insights, here are five (5) important leadership skills that we feel are important to have during a recession: 1.Strategic Thinking and Planning 2. Horizontal Leadership 3. Self-accountability 4. Communication 5. Ethics

  8. Important Leadership Skills • Strategic Thinking and Planning The ability to think strategically and build toward the future is a critical skill in times of recession. • Horizontal Leadership The leaders who are left standing in these difficult times are forced to do more with less. • Self-Accountability With layers of employees and leaders being cut, there is an impact on the systems, structures, and skills left in the organization. The leaders who remain are forced to look at the reality of the situation, see the big picture, and take ownership of their own circumstances while seeking solutions in uncharted waters. • Communications During a recession, leaders need to communicate openly, honestly, and often within the organization. • Ethics Transparency, honesty and providing the truth – even if it’s bad news – are as critical as any other competency on this list. Treating people with respect and creating an environment of honesty is a required leadership skill that must be employed at all times.

  9. Welcome to PMT!!! • PMT • Practical Micro Technologies (PMT) is a $5 billion dollar global company that designs, develops, and manufactures a variety of semiconductors including processing units, graphical units, storage, software, and networking. • Your Role • You have been with PMT for over 5 years and work in the Advanced Component Integration group responsible for cutting-edge product designs that integrate components and software from across the PMT organization. Your team’s designs keep PMT ahead of the competition in innovation and customer-focus.

  10. The Challenge • Since last year, PMT, like many other global organizations, has been affected by the global recession. • Revenues are off 35% • profits are negative • cash flow is tight • the market value of the company is down 65% from its early 2008 high. • The company just announced a global workforce reduction of 7%. • Up until today, you thought you were going to be laid off. You weren’t. BUT the GM of your group, PETER KLEIN was! • You have been appointed Manager of your group. You must forge ahead and take on new responsibilities the best you can. Back at your desk, you see a companywide email from Martin Karlin.
