  3. Biography of Nigeria Nigeria is the most populous country in the continent of Africa with a population more than 152 million people. In contrast, the population of Africa is one billion.  (show image asg2)  This means that roughly one in six Africans is a Nigerian. Early traditional history of Nigeria dates back to the year 700. The Europeans arrived for the first time in the late 15th century.

  4. Biography (cont.) The first Europeans in Africa were the Portuguese and the main aspect of the Euro-Africa commerce was slave-trading. On October 1, 1960, Nigeria Gained its independent from the United Kingdom. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigeria)   Nigeria has numerous tribes but the three main tribes are HAUSA, IGBOand YORUBA.(image asg4).

  5. POLITICS Nigeria practice a Federal Republic modeled after the United States. The president presides as both the Head of State and head of the national executive and is elected by popular vote to a maximum of two four-year terms. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigeria) Ethnocentrism, tribalism, religious persecution, and prebendalism have played a visible role in Nigeria politics both prior and subsequent to independence in 1960.

  6. HAUSA Population of 30million in Nigeria. Religion is Islam, important Muslim event is ;Eid al-Adha (sacrifice of goat and cow). Early marriage in their mid to late teens. They are quite and did not show emotion to outsiders. The sociocultural significance of this can not be over emphasized as it can be seen as cold by others outside of the tribe.   7. YORUBA These are the Western part of Nigeria with many dialects. In the past, it was common for many ethnics group to have tribal marks cut on the arms, wrists or cheeks for a variety of reasons. Today the practice is almost extinct. They are generally polite, cheerful with a great sense of humor and respectful with a high regard to elders and those in authority. YORUBA (CONT) • They are very fashionable with a wild variety of traditional fabrics such as ‘Asoke’, Lace, e.t.c. • They believe in Christianity, Islam and other traditional gods such as Ogun, Sango, Osun etc. • They are known for their elaborate celebrations such naming, marriage, birth or death.

  9. IGBO About 25million in the Southeastern part of Nigeria. They are business oriented and hard working. Like the Yorubas the Igbos belive in reincarnation. A bride price is paid by the groom with a huge amount of money and other gifts. A widow is subject to humiliation if the death of her husband is suspicious. Pics:- #1, #2, #3, #4,
