Legislative Mandates • Ministerial Directives establishing SANERI/NEEA • White Paper on Energy Policy, 1998 • SANEDI’s mandate is derived from the authority and obligations set out in the following policies, legislation and constitutional requirements:- • The SA Constitution,(Act 108 of 1996); • National Energy Act, (Act 34 of 2008); • The following specific plans, directives and public announcements which reinforces SANEDI’s responsibilities; • Strategic Plan of the Department of Energy.

SACCCS - 2013/14 Work Plan – Critical path • Appoint Project International Advisory Committee • Develop basin exploration execution plan including contracting strategy • Appoint Engineering/Procurement/Construction contractor • Commence public engagement in Zululand and Algoa basins • Apply for basin exploration and characterisation in Zululand and Algoa basins • Design Zululand and Algoa basin exploration plan • Commence seismic exploration of Zululand and Algoa basins
SACCCS – Highlights • Department of Energy has announced R207 million support of the Pilot CO2 Storage Project • The CCS Roadmap has been endorsed by the Cabinet • CCS has been named a near-term priority Flagship Programme in the National Climate Change Response White Paper • An Inter-Departmental Task Team on CCS has been established in Pretoria

Renewable Energy Technologies – Highlights • Wind Atlas – Phase 1 (WC, NC& EC – 1ST verified atlas published /Phase 2 (EC, KZN & FS) – funding confirmed • Support to Solar Park – install 2 measuring stations (1 supported by GIZ for installation in Upington & 1 as part of the DST/SAWS network for installation in Prieska) – stations to be included in the Solar Atlas for South Africa • RECORD – Highlights • Establishment of SARETC (Centre Manager in place /First cohort of technicians trained in Germany) • Support to RE education (Primary school art competition, Assaf conference on Energy (Young Scientists), Awarded Douglas Banks Bursary) • Ocean Energy Resource study published • Established Algal Bioenergy Platform and published 1st peer reviewed publication on the state of Algal Bioenergy Energy research in SA • INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION - Highlights • Signed 2013/14 REEEP contract • Hosted IEA Bioenergy EXCO and a Waste to Energy Workshop
