  1. Animal Survival Responding to the Environment

  2. G1: Give examples of environmental factors that affect behaviour • Moisture • pH • Light • Temperature

  3. C1: Explain the significance of responding to environmental stimuli SURVIVAL!!!!

  4. Woodlice • Found in damp, dark conditions • Why damp? • Prevents body from drying out • Why dark? • Less likely to be seen by predators SURVIVAL!!!!

  5. Plant Shoots • Will grow towards the light source • Why? • To improve the rate of photosynthesis SURVIVAL!!!!

  6. Frogs • Found in damp conditions • Why? • Water is required for external fertilisation • Frogs need moist skin for gas exchange SURVIVAL!!!!

  7. 10 minutes Choice Chamber Dark Light Dark Light • G2: Describe the response of an animal to change in one environmental factor. eg, Woodlice  Light/Dark Conditions

  8. Woodlice do not deliberately move to the dark side – when they are in bright light they move around more quickly and if they happen to move into the dark side they will slow down or stop. SURVIVAL!!!!

  9. G3: Describe examples of rhythmical behaviour and in each case, identify the external trigger stimulus. • C2: Explain the significance of rhythmical behaviour in named animals. • Rhythmical Behaviour = behaviour that is repeated at definite intervals (daily, tidal or annually) • External Trigger Stimulus = the environmental factor which causes the behaviour to start.

  10. Birds • Migrate to warmer climates (annual rhythm) • Trigger Stimulus = shorter day length • Reason = escape cold temperature and shortage of food during the winter SURVIVAL!!!!

  11. Hedgehogs • Hibernate through winter months (annual rhythm) • Trigger Stimulus = shorter day length • Reason = shortage of food during the winter SURVIVAL!!!!

  12. Cockroaches • More active at night (daily rhythm - circadian rhythm) • Trigger Stimulus = darkness • Reason = avoid predators by feeding at night SURVIVAL!!!!
