Aim of project • Drafting an ETUC Green Workplaces handbook for worker representatives , to contain • practical advice on energy and resources efficiency • produced with the support of funding from the European Commission for the ETUC’s Green Workplaces Network. • Including case studies from the trade union project partners and networks, covering their pilots of new green workplace projects and workplace training on environmental issues

  3. Getting started • Quick walkround checklist • Identifying quick wins • Using existing joint union-management arrangements • Example of German Works Councils • Union green events • Importance of involving union members • Environmental training a key focus • Importance of monitoring and review

  4. Getting organised • Who is responsible for environmental issues? • Finding out about environmental costs to business • The importance of environmental audits • Environmental management schemes • EMAS, ISO14001

  5. Practical action – energy saving • Measures being trialled can all help meet EU Energy Directive target of 20% energy reduction by 2020: • Energy audits • Working time • Insulation, draught-proofing, heating/cooling • Electrical & manufacturing efficiency • Automation • Co-generation and on-site renewables

  6. Practical action – resource use • Reducing resource use (and recycling) saves money, benefits ecosystems, and has huge climate change impacts • Examples of union involvement in workplace action include • Paper, packaging & raw materials • Water • Food

  7. Green Travel • Travel to work survey a good place to start • Green travel plans include measures like • Flexible working • Car sharing schemes • Promoting cycling and walking • Work buses & promoting local public transport • Using greener vehicles & eco-driving training

  8. The bigger picture – beyond the workplace Green Jobs • Alliance for Jobs, Germany • Jobs must be high quality (example of recycling industry) Green Skills • Green construction skills project at South Thames College, UK
