American Military Mobilization • First Task – Build up numbers in military • Resolution: Selective Service Act – a law enacted in 1917, that required men to register for military service • Draft • Almost 10 million men registered at first, and by 1918 there were over 24 million • Lottery system chose over 3 million to go to Europe
American Military Mobilization • Training • 9 months • Didn’t have any weapons to train with • Women • Were not allowed in the army • Army Corps of Nurses – didn’t give army rank, pay, and benefits • Navy and marines had women work as nurses, telephone operators, and secretaries with full military rank. • African Americans • Segregated
American Success in Combat • Second Task – transport troops overseas, along with food and equipment sufficient for them and for America’s allies. • Result: • A. America began building massive amounts of ships • B. Each merchant ship was surrounded by destroyers. • C. Planted mines in the water • By the First months of 1918 Allies had overcome the U-boat threat
American Success in Combat • Fighting in Europe • Americans were enthusiastic (hadn’t been fighting for 3 years) • General John J. Pershing commanded the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) • “doughboys” – name given to American soldiers because of the white belts that they wore and polished with “dough”- pipe clay • Pershing believed in an aggressive combat not trenches

The collapse of Germany • November 3, 1918 • German admiralty (naval leadership) ordered the fleet out to sea. • Sailors and marines said no and refused to man the ships. • Many Germans said that they were not going to fight anymore. • Kaiser abdicated the throne • 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 Germany surrendered. • 30 nations • 26 million deaths (1/2 disease, starvation, or exposure) • $350 billion
