PSAT Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a program cosponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) Wednesday October 12, 2011
All Sophomores will take Juniors may take by signing up with their school counselor for $20 (CASH ONLY) If your student took last year and scored well---MUST take as a Junior to be considered for National Merit PSAT
College Planning • Too Soon? • NEVER!! TOO SOON……….
SAT and ACT • Sign up on line at • www.collegeboard.org ; www.act.org • Juniors should start in the Spring at the LATEST!!!!
SURF…….. • Internet • Register on www.collegeboard.com • www.cappex.com • Visit individual school sites on the web • Arrange campus visit if possible
Resume • Start building that resume • Keep track of awards, community service, athletics, clubs, offices held • Keep it up to date • Keep it simple

Sophomore Parents • Sophomore Year is one of personal growth. Students need to explore their abilities, aptitudes and interests. • Look for ways to further develop their talents and skills and CHALLENGE THEM!!! • Help set realistic academic goals each semester • Monitor Interim Reports/ Report cards and PARENT PORTAL • Encourage students to be involved and develop leadership skills.
Junior Parents • Most IMPORTANT ACADEMIC YEAR • DISCUSS after High School plans • Plan College Visits • Stay on top of grades! Interim Reports/Report Cards---PARENT PORTAL
AP versus Dual Enrollment • Most of our AP classes can be taken as a Dual Enrollment Option • Requires Student to complete application for Virginia Western • Fee of $99 PER CLASS PER SEMESTER= One Dual Enrollment class is $198 in addition to AP Fees.
To Receive College Credit • AP Score must be a 3 minimum. Many Colleges require a 4 or 5 AP Score to grant College Credit • Dual Enrollment credit of C or better will give you college credit IN STATE!!! • Each College/University makes its own determination. • Check their website or with the Admissions Office
A few reminders • PH requires Math and Science all four years of High School • Students who are ENGAGED in school---STAY IN SCHOOL • Support and encourage Extra Curricular Activities in your students
