  5. Doctrine of Betrayal

  6. 1. Introduction

  7. The betrayal of our Lord was first prophesized in Psa 41:9, “Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.”

  8. The betrayal of a close friend, companion or family member hurts more and cuts deeper than the betrayal of a casual acquaintance or a known enemy.

  9. The sins of the world are the sins of loved ones that our Lord had to bear.

  10. Judas’ betrayal was within the Plan and purpose of God.Cf. John 13:2, 21-22, 26; Mat 10:4; 26:21-25, 45; 27:3; Mark 3:19; 14:18-21, 41; Luke 22:21-23.

  11. 1 Cor 11:23, “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which He was betrayed took bread.”

  12. 2. Etymology

  13. Betrayal - PARADIDOMI, "to hand over, to give or deliver over, or to betray".

  14. To deliver up one to custody, to be judged, condemned, punished, scourged, tormented, put to death. To deliver up treacherously by betrayal and to cause one to be taken and to deliver one to be taught or molded.

  15. Betrayer - PRODOTES means “to give before, give first, or first given”.Acts 7:52, and can also mean a traitor as in Luke 6:16; 2 Tim 3:4

  16. Acts 7:52, “Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become.”

  17. Luke 6:16,“Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.”

  18. 3. Definition

  19. Wikipedia Dictionary “A form of deception or dismissal of prior presumptions, is the breaking or violation of a presumptive social contract (trust, or confidence)…

  20. ... that produces moral and psychological conflict within a relationship amongst individuals, between organizations or between individuals and organizations.

  21. Often betrayal is the act of supporting a rival group, or it is a complete break from previously decided upon or presumed norms by one party from the others.”

  22. Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary defines "betray",“To lead astray, especially seduce. To deliver to an enemy by treachery.

  23. …To fail or desert especially in time of need. To reveal unintentionally, show, or indicate. To disclose in violation of confidence or to prove false.”

  24. 4. Psychological Effect of Betrayal

  25. Betrayal can have a significant detrimental effect on the psyche of an individual, called Betrayal Trauma.

  26. Betrayal trauma occurs when people or institutions that are depended on for survival violate human trust. For example childhood physical, emotional, or sexual abuse.

  27. Today most mental health professionals accept betrayal trauma as a possible alternative diagnosis to traditional post traumatic stress disorder.

  28. A subset of this is called Political Betrayal, where trust in the government is betrayed leading to extreme anger.

  29. Fear and anger are the two sides to the fight-flight response, and as such are our strongest and most basic psychological emotions.
